What's your experience with internet phone services????

We are considering changing to an internet phone service. Can my fellow CBers give me the good, the bad, and the ugly on them?

What company is good? Why?

What company should we avoid? Why?

Over the past few years ive tried several and for the most part of it have been reasonably happy.

Vonage isnt too bad, $24.99 a month and they are now offering free international calling. One thing I really don't like is it appears to be very unpredictable with call quality. I have a 20Mb cable connection and at times vonage doesnt seem to handle things really well (especially when I am downloading)

Most of them lock you into a contract of some sort and have some pretty expensive early termination fees.

We have Time Warner phone with our cable and internet service. It saves us a bunch to do it this way. The only draw back is not having service if the electricity goes out, as it does often here for some reason. We have several cell phones so that isn't a problem even then. Quality has been good and no other problems.

I tried it once with Earthlink. I had such a horrible experience, I'm actually now happy to pay my ridiculous Verizon bill every month. Earthlink has got to be the most inept company ever. We were without any phone service at all for over a month. It's not a gamble I'll take again.

Atlantic Broadband..we've had it since April and love it..it was costing us almost $45 a month with Verizon with NO long distance service..it's now costing us $29.95 a month with unlimited service..we have call forwarding, voice mail, caller ID, call blocking, and other features we haven't figured out yet..lol..as the other poster said, the only time we won't have service is when the electric is out, but that hasn't happened to us yet..and we have a cell phone just for emergencies..we had one problem when one of our internet lines lost a signal..but they had a service guy out here within 2 hours to repair it..we have our digital cable, internet and phone service with them now..it saves us a bundle!..good luck!
