My Dad's name is Edward.
He's sort of got a middle name of Ambrose, but it's not on his birth certificate. The story he told me is that when he enlisted (late 1943 I think), the paperwork required a middle name or at least a middle initial. Enlistees who didn't have a middle name were told to put down the first letter of their last name as their middle initial. The "Ambrose" part came after the war, when he applied for a job and was asked what the "A" stood for. It's one of those stories that OUGHT to be true, whether it is or not.
