Well let's see. I moved here when I was 11. Imagine someone moving from San Francisco to East B.F. Egypt. I mean out in the middle of no where.
I would not brown nose, kiss up, or even be remotely cordial to the kids in my class. Heck 1/2 of them never left the state and the other 1/2 never left New England. I guess I was a little to worldly for them. So I move away after high school, get married, have 4 kids, and move back.
Well you would have thought the roof fell in because I had 4 kids and how was the town going to support them from an educational stand point.
I was extremely vocal about how our taxes needed to go up to support the changing needs at school. Well little miss spinster and her 2 sisters decided we didn't need a separate art, music, and computer teacher. One could do it all. So I went a crazy about that. Then I talked to the news stations several times about the Mushroom Farm. We wanted them closed because it was causing several health issues and frankly the smell was so bad there were days I was so ill I couldn't get out of bed. So a few weeks ago when the Mushroom Farm announced they were moving to Pa. the governor came to town to try to stop it. I met her at the town hall and offered for her to come to my house the next time it smelled so bad that you couldn't leave your home. Well she said 300 people are going to lose their jobs. Um Gov. Rell those 300 people were migrant workers trucked in monthly from Mexico without green cards. They have raids 3-4 times a year on the place. I also told her if she needed to feel bad for someone and wanted to help then she can come to my house the next time DS4 was sitting up in the middle of the night coughing so bad he can't breathe from a respiratory infection. They happened almost by-weekly. Let me tell you when you sit there and watch your son turn blue because he's coughing so hard he can't catch his breath, I could give a rat's you know what about someone losing their job. BTW did the banana dance when they closed!! Partial closing now and permanently shutting down as of 6/30/06. No smell and no infections for 3 weeks!
Needless to say the I'm not top on the first selectman's list of friends right now. But like I said oh well! :confused3

Sorry didn't mean to high jack the tread.

You go girl!!! I would have been right there with you on the issue with the teacher.. Some people expect miracles from teachers.. I guess we are pretty lucky here.. We have 3 seperate teachers for those classes.. WE have teachers aides available in the classrooms... Our school uses parent volunteers a lot too..
As for the mushroom plant.. never been close to one but if it was like you said.. I would so be there.. Especially in regards to the health of my kids and my family... In my little home- town (WHICH I SO MOVED AWAY FROM) they bring migrant workers in to pick tomatoes.. So, I can relate to that situation too.. I so was thrilled when my brother and I finally convinced my parents to sell the home and get the heck out of there..
I acutally was approached by a woman in the grocery when I had all 5 of my kids and 2 kids I watch for friend and asked me if I knew what birth control was.. I was not nice in my response.. I flat told her where she could fly! My dh makes a good living for us.. we could have more!

Buffy, you sound like my kind of people!

My late great uncle Ira Jones was Elvis seargent in the army. Elvis job was to drive my uncle around in his jeep. Uncle wrote a book titled "Soldier Boy Elvis" that is available for purchase only at Graceland. You can find him if you put his name in and "Google" him. My uncle autographed a copy for me before he died.

I drive through "Mushroom Country" on my way to Lancaster, PA....STINKY! All those spores and stuff can't be good for breathing. Glad things are better up your way now!

Queenie - My OH is related to Scott of the Antarctic!

My big claim to fame is I'm related to Richard Byrd first American who flew over Antarctica.

I was also a fellow US Capitol Page with Jonathon Turley who does a lot of commentary on news shows about politics and law issues.

Well, I don't think I have ever done or met anyone important - except that I think my friends are important (and they know it).

My grandmother (a Reagan) was distantly related to Ronald Reagan - something like 5th or 6th cousin - not really worth counting but she had photos from a family reunion on her wall when I was a kid and she pointed him out and told me that he was an actor out in Hollywood.

My DH on the other hand has met a lot of people - he is a newspaper photographer.

He sat with Piper Laurie at the airport after her handlers told him that they needed to leave and didn't want to leave her alone.

Jessica Lange ran into him (litterally) while chasing one of her children when he was at the closed base where they filmed Blue Skyes when he was there taking pictures.

I know he went up to the sets while they were filming Big Fish just north of Montgomery (little place called Wetumpka) but I don't' know who he actually met while there - I need to ask him about that. Also a sorority sister and one of my co-workers were an extras in that movie.

He gets to meet lots of artists and politicians - he has taken photos of most of the presidents since he started working as a photographer. I don't know if he as actually ever been introduced to one or not though.

He was meeting famous people while he was still in college though - There were a couple of guys from the TV show Mission Impossible in an elevator and then someone else he met in a bar but I can't remember who - both of these on a trip to Texas.

One day I will have to get him to make a list of all the famous people he has seen and those he has actually met.

One of my art teachers in college told us a wonderful story about meeting Vincent Price. My teacher liked to do silhouettes of people and when he met Vincent Price he asked if he could do one of him. Not only did he get to do a silhouette of him, Mr. Price either used to be or wanted to be an art teacher and he asked my teacher a lot of questions about himself and what teaching was like and what the students were like. Made me like/respect Vincent Price a lot more knowing that he would take interest in some lowly jr college art teacher's life.

I use to be addicted to that show! :rotfl:

My Great-Uncle (dad's uncle) was a fighter pilot for the US Navy back in the 40's and 50's. William Holden starred in a movie "The Bridges at Toko-Ri". The final scene has WH getting in to a plane and flying away. My Great-Uncle was the one who actually was in the cockpit with WH and flew the plane.

My mother and I were in an elevator with Scottie Pippen. I am 6 ft tall and mom is about 5 ft 3 or 4. She stood there in silence while quietly looking him up and down. Her statement to me when he got off was "boy, isn't he a big boy" :rotfl:

I was able to get into a post concert party with Neal McCoy and got to talk to him a little. He is a really nice guy.

My aunt & uncle used to be business partners with John Wayne.

My biggest claim to fame is that I am currently e-mailing back & forth with Jeff Probs't mom :) We've been friends for years. He's not around too terribly much, but he did autograph some Survivor stuff with very personalized messages for my parents' 40th anniversay!
