What's with the underwear?

My 4 yr old ds insists on dressing himself these days. He can get his shirt, pants, socks, and shoes on just fine. The undies are ALWAYS backwards though. It doesn't seem to bother him, so I just let him be. It's driving my dh crazy though.

DS used to do this as well. I think sometimes it was just a control kind of thing. They do it because it is the opposite of what is expected of them. DS seems to always wear his underwear the correct way but he still loves to put on his shirts backwards. He says he likes it better that way.

My dd is almost 7 and ALWAYS has to ask me which way her underwear goes. However, it's pretty easy to be confused by little girl undies since they look the same no matter which way you turn them.

at least he puts them on! The 4 year old I babysit just refuses to wear any. He does everything else except the underwear. I dont get it!

My ds does this too. He used to tell me it was because the better picture is on the back. Now he wears whitey tighties and still does it. It wouldn't bother me except he's always picking his undies out of his butt since he has a wedgie. Someone on here once suggested I buy him some boxer briefs. I did and he wears them too and they don't ride up.

My ds does this too. He used to tell me it was because the better picture is on the back.

My DS did the same thing for the same reason we still tease him about it and he will be 18 next month - I would send him off to school knowing those undies were on the right way and he would get to school and turn them around so he had a better view of Batman!

DS5 will sometimes do that as well, but not often. I just look at him, smile and say, "Looks like it's a backwards kind of day." He'll usually giggle, smile or say "Yep!"

When he was in daycare full time, there was a day that was called "Backwards Day" where everyone (including the staff) would wear their clothes backwards.

See for guys, you don't use that flap, so forward, backwards, insideout, it is all good.

Fortunately it's cooling off here. All summer, all he wanted to wear was his backwards undies and sandals.

My youngest ds used to do this too..he just liked being able to see the picture ..I left him alone about it and he grew out of it and puts them on the "right" way now. I'm sure your ds will too!

My 3 year old does this with his shoes and no matter how hard I try to get him to switch them, he will not give in willingly...I say "ride-it-out" and after a few weeks/months he will soon do the right thing. Sometimes making a big deal out of something like this is not really worth the fight (no matter how crazy something drives you)...RELAX, once the underwear issue is resolved he will just find something else to drive you nuts (this coming from a mother of a 15 year old, 10 year old, and 3 year old)...there now, didn't I make you feel so much better about parenthood?

Oh yeah...I almost forgot (until I seen an above post about the daughter always having to ask which way her underwear go)...in kindergarten, my youngest daughter used to go to school with her undies on the correct way and come home with them on....get this ladies and gentlemen...sideways!!! I only WISH for the days that I could put my big "hinnie" through the leg holes of my undies... ...I would tell her they were on this way and ask her if it hurt...she said they felt just fine...all I have to say is (to me) that would make a thong feel comfortable!!!

DD4 has two pairs of underwear she insists on wearing backwards so she can "see them". They are both Disnye: 101 Dalmations and her Marie undies. I just let it go now.
