What's with the occupancy thread?

I think the occupancy thread phenomenon is fascinating and probably worthy of formal study. If I were a psychologist I would write a grant proposal and come up with some theory for why saying:

"I put 6 people in a 1 bedroom"

creates intense rage. I'm sure there are taxpayer dollars out there waiting to investigate something like this.

[Please note if you did see 6 people in a 1 BR it definitely was NOT us -- we have 7 people.]

If you study the occupancy thread postings over time, it seems there are actually only a handful of DIS'ers who think it's a big deal and they tend to post the same arguments over and over and over and over... It becomes tedious reading the same old occupancy mantras after a while. Realistically, I suspect the vast majority of DVC members probably don't care one way or the other, but the impression one gets from reading the thread is that occupancy is the most critical and important issue in all of DVC. A formal study of this phenomenon would be fascinating, I agree, but not with tax dollars! ( how about member dues? - LOL! )

I never open those threads. (I was kind of afraid to open this one.)

My point was not to start another occupancy thread -- there's already one going on-- but to marvel at how we feel the need to keep arguing both sides over and over.

We can't seem to bear the thought (myself included) that someone disagrees with us and actually believes they are right. And we aren't. And we can't convince them.

Maybe we should all just put our opinion in our signature so everyone will know and we won't have to keep reiterating it.

Well, it shouldn't surprise you that there are discussions - sometimes quite heated - in a Discussion Forum. While Occupation is one of the few "Holy War Classics" [See also: Mugs, Refillable and Hopping, Pool], in general it is discussions like these that make the DIS interesting. As much as I love "Welcome Homes", "Pixie Dust" and "Single-Digit Dancing", if that's all that there was here, I wouldn't be back very often.

As for you suggestion, I used to have "Make my day - put 5 in a one bedroom" in my DIS sig, but only as a joke....

I sure do agree with you on that! Sometimes it gets downright BORING around here.

I don't like the nasty stuff, though and am glad we have the mods to keep the lid on the worst of it.

Have been wracking my poor brain lately trying to figure out something new we can "discuss". Dean's devious post will keep me going for a little while, LOL. Maybe I'll come up with something on the plane or while daydreaming through the business portion of the BWV annual meeting. :teeth:

Best wishes -

Have faith, Carol. Just when things were getting boring and the "ROFR Results" thread was about as exciting as it got, along came the "DVC AP Discount" to provide grist for the mill.

And if nothing comes up in the near future, we can always, ahem, start a few rumors ourselves: "DVC Announces Gay Discounts"; "DVC Reduces Occupancy: ST=2, 1BR=3, 2BR=4"; "Pool Hopping Expanded to Include All WDW Resorts". ;)

I have to agree with Dr Tomorrow. The DIS would be very boring if no one ever had a disagreement. I have pretty set ideas about occupancy, taking kids out of school, and pool hopping (the biggy to me, and yes, I have seen it first hand) but I do not get upset when people disagree. That is just life. I have a right to my opnion and so does everyone else.

The occupancy threads are fun to read as you get to see some really ridiculus arguments made.....on both sides of the issue. My all-time favorite threads deal with the alleged "quiet pools" and whether or notchildren should be banned from them.

The results of The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) instrument for some of the key posters in these discussions are rather predictable, grant or no grant. Just my $0.02.

I agree that you may be able to determine some personality types based on forum posts. But I don't think personality explains the "occupancy phenomenon."

Just like I don't think personality (of the voters) explains why we were all so up-in-arms about this last election. I think all personality types were getting hot.

Personally, I think the issue is something more basic to human nature. More universal. Found in everyone but the most phlegmatic.

Agreed, it goes beyond personality types. It sounds as if you are familiar with The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) instrument and it's application and use and are well aware it goes beyond just identifying personality types.

So much for the study grant ....
:badpc:

manning,

Now, THAT would be an interesting thread, LOL!

What happened to this thread? Seems like it used to be longer.

It's getting late. I first read it as "I put 6 people in 1 Bed".
For some reason, I think that thread would get locked fairly quickly :earseek:

What happened to all the stuff on on this thread comparing putting 5 in a 1 bedroom to hillbillies or refugees? It was getting really good. By "good" I mean entertaining to read. :teeth:

Sorry to let things slow down and get reasonable, NMW ::grin::. Hmmm...., since I'm off to a week at WDW in a 2BR at SSR with a great couple of friends, I'll stir things up and "Run Away!"

People who do put more people in a DVC Villa than is expressly allowed in the contract are ignorant, selfish scum.

People who complain about other people violating occupancy rules are sanctimonious, self-important prigs.

People who have no real feelings on the matter are wishy-washy, spineless wimps.

There, I think that covers everybody - now let's get things going for NMW again, shall we!

Liberal ;) ;) ;) for the sarcasm impaired.

IMHO - YMMV

I thought this was the "there ought to be a study about room occupancy thread posters" discussion, not about room occupancy itself. I know it's easy to get off track. :thewave:

Given the OP's question, has anyone here read studies about behavioral aspects of internet and e-mail communication?

Yeah! I wondered about that and thought, "Am I going crazy?" or "Was that another thread or just a dream?"

Did a mod clip it? It was some of my best stuff.

And CMidnight, all your stuff about MMPI!

Anyway, I think there's something about human nature that's unwilling to abide the presence of another that disagrees with a strongly held opinion. Particularly an opinion on what is right and wrong -- morality.

We could follow the example of a typical church and split the forum into two: the DVC rule-followers and the DVC live-and-let live forums.

I would probably bop back and forth depending on my mood that day. And of course that situation would be ripe for trolls. :smooth: or anyone looking for kicks.
