What's up with the dollar.

I really wish the loonie would get better. We are heading down at the end of October and not sure if I should hang on and exchange closer to the date?

It's very frustrating to watch it go up and then back down. It seems that if someone up here sneezes the wrong way the dollar goes down, where as the US looks like a mess right now but their dollar remains strong. We've got our flights booked for March, due to the weak dollar we're flying out of Canada this year. I'll book our Disney package when the winter discounts are announced. I'm looking at all options this year including staying at one of the Disney Springs resorts that offer a shuttle if the price is better. Anything to keep the cost down.

I just buy some every month and transfer to my USD acct. I also have a CIBC USD Visa.

It's very hard to predict what will happen with the exchange rate. Canada is seen by investors as primarily a resource based economy. So when oil goes up the exchange rate improves. If oil goes down the exchange rate worsens. Right now oil is declining in price so investors see our dollar as worth less so it costs more to buy US dollars. Will oil go back up? Sure, but the real guess is when and no one including investors knows the answer to that one.

It's a double edged sword, really. If the dollar is crap due to oil being priced low, it's a WIN for many in terms of home heating costs and gasoline costs. If oil is priced high, it's great for travel.

I like having manageable home heating costs in the winter :)

Now, if we could just get our NS Power and Municipal water costs to go down, I'd have plenty of money for US money! (A gal can wish!)

Insulation and better windows worked great for me. Throw on some winter window film for even better results.
We have blankets in every room of the house ... cold is easy to deal with BUT this heat & humidity we're suffering through this year? There's only so much clothing you can remove and still answer the door :P

Our windows are brand new, no issues with those. Attic is insulated also.

We also have hot water baseboard heating...it all adds up in the end.

I hear ya on the humidity! I love a good, dry heat wave, but being on the coast we get a lot of humidity.

I am so trying not to complain about the heat and humidity because soon enough it will be snowing. But it's getting a little ridiculous trying to do something outside and swear rolling off after 5 min
I see fall clothing in all stores now so I'm enjoying the heat while I can!

The Canadian dollar just crack the 78 cents mark this morning, and has pretty good momentum in the last week, so if this upswing continues, we may reach 80 cents before summer is over?

I hope so. Want to pay off my room ressie but waiting til the $$ is better.

I hope so! We still have a small balance left on our January Fantasy cruise and that has to be paid by mid October.

There's been a little bit of a spike in oil prices, which seems to have given the dollar a boost. Be careful as we approach September as this is when OPEC is supposed to meet. The hope is that they are going to freeze oil production, but my opinion is they will not. I personally think the bump will be short lived.

However - I hope that I am wrong as we have a trip planned for January :-)

Interest rate changes the US will also impact the loonie's pixie dust value.

I think we will convert our spending/food money for our trip today. I can live with today's rate, so I might as well get it over with. Who knows how bad it could be in October? I don't feel like waiting to see.

And
because the Duck is uber lazy today, just what IS today's rate?

Noon rate isn't out for an hour. Yesterday's close was 1.2767. Rate at a local exchange place is 1.3096 so your actual should be somewhere between the two.
