What's up with the beds @ OKW?

My favorite resort is Wilderness Lodge, but I loved the king bed at Old Key West in July - it seemed very comfy compared to the saggy, mushy mattress at VWL in Jan!

What I've never understood is "what's UP with the beds at OKW?" I mean, like way up high? I practically need a step stool to get into it. And sitting on the edge of the bed-forget it! I've never figured out why they have to be like that.

we just got back home from OKW tonight and are sooooo happy to be back in our beds. my DH said "now i see why old people say they 'can't wait to get home to their beds'."
we LOVE being DVC members and love OKW. were actually considering adding on points there. i see the difference in opinion of people liking soft vs firm beds, but is it possible that some of the beds are rock hard and maybe some are not? if anyone has stayed multiple times at OKW and has had different experiences with different beds, please let us know. if all of the beds are this firm, we will probably...sadly...never stay there again. this trip we stayed 6 nights and every morning that i woke up was worse than the previous night. i am one who normally does not wake up at all through the night, but every night i woke up several times. last night i slept on the couch bed. i think it may have been a little better, but by that time, my body was so stiff that i couldn't give it a fair chance at being comfortable either.
we had to whirlpool every morning just to loosen up from the night's "rest"! thank goodness for the whirlpool. i'm only 29 years old! this bed was ridiculous. i really hope that all of the beds at OKW are not this firm because it is such a beautiful resort.

Dh and I loved OKW (DH was especially pleased with the resort) but the one thing we HATED was the beds. I literally got up around midnight each night Iand took prescription pain pills because the beds made me so sore and stiff. I actually liked the beds at POP better than the OKW beds

I'm glad to hear that someone thinks the beds at SSR are good. We stayed there a couple of years ago but don't remember how the beds were.

I also found the beds at OKW to be rock hard.
Im talking we checked in at 3am and I was up by 7am calling Mousekeeping asking for an eggcrate "rock hard". We stayed 2 nights and I dont think I would have made it a week. We were in a studio before our cruise last year.

OTOH, I LOVE the beds at SSR. I think those are the most comfortable beds at any of the DVC's, especially the King.
.

Did they bring an egg crate? Did it help?

I might try the pull out next time since someone thought that was more comfy

We stayed at OKW in December and the beds were like concrete slabs. I think it would have been softer to sleep on the floor. I'm hoping by the time I go back this December, they'll have been replaced, but I may bring a mattress topper with me just in case.

Everywhere else we've stayed, the beds have been fine. But OKW, man. Those beds are awful.

I had a cheap air mattress packed this past trip just in case the beds were like the OKW ones. We were at AKV 4 nights and SSR 5 nights. I loved the AKV beds and the SSR ones were okay also. I love OKW but the beds make me very sore in the morning. I had planned to use the air mattress ( one of those thin ones) like an egg crate topper if need be. It came home in new condition but will be ready for another trip when we go to OKW. We too have a sleep number bed.

We have always found the beds at OKW to be fine. We have stayed there 4 times now. Not sure if we are so tired from everything we fit into a day or if we don't mind the beds. I do have one other complaint though. I'm not sure if anyone else notices but we can't stand the couchs. Especially the small one. To sit on it we took off the back cushions and put pillows because it was so uncomfortable. We take friends with us so we use the living area a lot to sit around later at night and we missed the comfort of a nice couch. Won't keep us from going back though, we love OKW. Wish I was there right now.

I didn't notice the rock hard beds, did they change them out since three years back? Then again, we called housekeeping for more pillows. It helped & they made us the housekeeping family of the day with balloons & a certificate :rotfl:

I noticed I did sleep far better when we moved over to BWV.

My DH thought the tub at OKW would have been better than the king bed. Those beds are like sheets over boulders. We really really really love the new beds at BWV. The new foldout sofas are very comfy, too.

I find almost all hotel beds too hard. I noticed that about 15 to 20 years ago, all hotels seemed to go to these hard mattresses. My husband says I'm like The Princess and the Pea. :) I wake up in the morning feeling bruised all over. :confused3

It took me til about night 3 to get used to that bed this past summer. We stayed 8 nights then moved to BCV and then I thought that the BCV bed was too soft after getting used to the OKW bed. Shoot I am at Disney World....I don't care about the beds....................I would sleep on straw if I had to.....just to be there. :goodvibes

We've been member for 11 years and the beds at all DVC resorts have never been quite like home. We love OKW and I have never notice the beds there being any worse than any of the other resorts. But I can tell you that if you have a tough time sleeping on any of the beds at a DVC resort you better not go to Europe. The beds there, especially in Italy, are really like boards. People laughed at our videos. When we slapped the bed it sounds just like slapping a block of cement. You could sleep on the sidewalk and it would feel the same. If you tripped and fell on the edge of the mattress it would probably knock you out. It took us a few nights to get used to the mattresses in Europe, and we have a pretty firm mattress at home. Our ABD guides said that it is pretty much the same throughout Europe. I will never complain about the beds at any WDW resort again!

:rotfl: I can't remember that about the beds. My daughter and I went in July of 07 to Italy and I have to think about that those beds again. We stayed all over Italy in several hotels. I am going to ask her when she gets home later. Of course we didn't get much sleep while there so maybe when we did lay down we were soooooooo tired we just crashed for our few hours of sleep. :rotfl:

the beds were so hard they didn't even bounce.

I wake up stiff & sore from hard beds & walk like I'm about 110 uears old when I get up! We stayed at OKW in Aug. & I couldn't believe how hard those beds were - there wasn't an ounce of give!

Seriously, though...I'm getting a bit worried because we'll be at OKW in March.

When we check in, I request 2 egg crate mattress pads and put them together, back to back and re-make the bed with the pads. I'd never make it without them!

Although I have ALWAYS loved our trips to Disney, I was in tears from getting no sleep the first night when we stayed at OKW. The bed was so hard, it reminded me of laying on a table. I had talked to housekeeping the day before and got nowhere (they sent a thin eggcrate that did nothing). The morning after not sleeping and my joints aching from laying on the hard surface, I called the front desk and in my attempt to explain the situation, I could not stop weeping...they put me on hold and played "Happy Place" until someone else could help me. When the manager came back on, she directed the engineers to come to see what type of mattress we had and then they brought us a softer one. They said the H-A-R-D mattress that we had was one of the brand NEW ones!! They replaced it with a nice pillow top that felt marvelous and mentioned that they have to change out mattresses frequently because of the taste of the people staying there wanting HARD versus pillowtop. I hope the people who got that villa after us liked the pillowtop mattress we got for them. We will probably never stay at OKW again because I would not want to chance getting a rock-hard mattress again and have to go thru the hassle of getting a better mattress. I have never cried at WDW except for that one time and I don't want to chance it again. I knew I couldn't survive 6 more nights on that hard bed....I was ready to move offsite if it wasn't resolved. The staff was so nice to me and definitely worked with us to get things fixed....I just wish I had done something smarter the night before. This experience put a dark shadow on our view of OKW because of the beds.

If we spent most of our time at OKW, it would probably be worth getting an Owners Locker just to store a thermal foam bed topper (one of those "astronaut foam" type things). We use them at home and love them - no aches in the morning. The egg crate pads aren't quite as good, but they'd be a big help. We DO like OKW (very much) - except for the beds, which we find to be a major drawback. We keep hoping they'll be updated at some point.

But your mileage may vary. You might not have a problem with the beds. My BIL thought they were fine.
