Whats the Purpose of a Guest of Honor Badge?

I was just curious but what is the purpose of a guest of honor badge? I see them mentioned in a lot of posts and have looked at them online. But what are they for? Are they simply things that you collect over time or do people actually wear them around the parks? And if you wear them around the parks is there a particular reason for doing this? I was thinking of getting my little cousin some of them (she's 8) for her next Disney trip but I didn't know if I should be telling her to just save it or to wear it. Thanks so much!

No real purpose. They resemble the CM's name badges. It is fun to wear one and see the CM's call you by name.
