What's the proper etiquette...

I would take the ugly side of a fence of that any day. It looks like a bunch of drunken sailors got together and put up a fence :lmao:

LOL....I thought that too....I actually thought it was a joke, not a real fence!!!!

I'm guessing the good neighbor fence is a CA thing? It's normal around here in Sacramento. I've always heard of asking if the neighbor wants to share the cost. Maybe the difference is is that here, most people have back yard fences and it's odd NOT to have one. When I moved to Oklahoma, it was odd to have a back yard fence.

That must be a CA thing because it would be considered a bad neighbor to put up something that looked like that here....it looked like it was patchworked together.....sure hope that trend doesn't come here!!!! I would take the bad side of a regular fence anyday over that! EVERYONE here has a fence- don't know any house without one.

I agree with that! That looks awful to me.

That is a good neighbor fence around here. The individual slats change sides, not massive sections.

Not crazy about that look either but if I had to pick one of thme I think it would have to be this one.....they both look like patchwork fences though.

I'm looking at fence pictures now and I found this one:

I think that one is my favorite out of the three.

i gotta wonder how difficult it would be to replace a slat if it broke with this style.

How much is a survey? I realize it depends on where you live in the country and probably how big your lot is....but.....ballpark anyone?

When we moved into our house it had ugly chain link fence and we want to replace it with privacy fencing. We've been told by neighbors that our property line is actually several feet beyond what is fenced now, but really want a survey done before we install the new fence.

We just asked the neighbors if we could use their already existing fence for one side of our yard. We offered to pay them. They said no since the fence was already there when they moved in. We really weren't able to put a fence up a few inches from there because there is a huge tree that runs along the property line.

The good neighbor fence actually looks good in person. I don't know of anyone around here who has put a large fence up a few inches/feet from their property line. Everyone I have ever known has done the property line and it was just common for a neighbor to "hook on" for their fence.
