Whats the point of 'Community Board' forum?

There was a thread regarding the current situation in the Middle East that got removed and it was civil. There wouldn't be any point in starting another one.

I must have missed that entirely. But then again it would not be something I’d be interested in discussing.

All I know is that I like it here. I like the Community Board, the topics, and most of all I like the people. We're just the kids in detention shooting the breeze to pass the time. The world is rapidly going downhill-the CB is an escape for me. I discuss the deeper stuff here sometimes, but I enjoy the lighter threads precisely *because* they take me out of world events for a while.
I love your posts and not sure if you recall, but we are somewhat kindred spirits.

I've met amazing people here, many who I call friends virtually and IRL.

Anybody who wants to chat with a surprisingly liberal, homeschooling, somewhat bonkers, former executive, wife, and mama...I'm your girl.

That's fine, but there should be something for everyone. You don't have to read any thread you don't want too. I certainly don't. We should be able to discuss current events and the moderators should moderate the threads not just shut them down. I have participated in forums where they would ban posters from participating in a thread if they crossed the line, but they didn't shut down the whole thread.
There is something for everyone. The so-called relevant posts are there. If they don't get traction, it's not the fault of the threads that do. I'm well versed in current events, and I discuss them in 'real life' often. I don't come here for that. I come to escape. I think lots of people do. I contribute to the weightier threads when I have something to say, but too often the same group of people come into those threads and get argumentative and that's what gets the thread shut down.

I too didn't see the thread about the situation in the Middle East. I will say though, that if that particular discussion started out polite, it soon would have descended into arguments I think, which is why it was removed. If you can't play nice, expect to be headed off at the pass before you can misbehave (I'm using the 'you' in a general sense here.)

...The moderating here has loosened up a bit over the past few months after one of the previous owners left. From discussions I observed around that time, it seemed there was a consensus of a bit of heavy handedness in moderating. I was one, on this board, many years ago. I am familiar how it works. I have seen threads in the past few months go on and not be shut down that would have been 6 months ago. Those threads typically are more relevant, more timely, less fluff...
:scratchin Is there anything about this process that you could explain to us, Dan? Sometimes just understanding makes things a little more palatable. The seemingly capricious nature of having posts deleted, threads poofed and the ever-lurking danger of points (none of which ever receive an explanation when sincere enquires are made) often puts a damper on wanting to participate meaningfully in some of the "meatier" threads.

You just explained the problem in a nutshell. First, you admit that you didn't even see the thread (IIRC, it was up for a couple of days), but then you assumed it would have gotten into arguments (which I agree with PP who said it was pretty civil) and would have gone "poof" BEFORE it degenerates.

So, if you (general) can anticipate which threads will go "poof" (because they're being 'headed off at the pass'), why even start one? I agree with @DCLMP on that.

Where I disagree with him (her, they, whatever) however is it's our choice to frequent not only the Dis but the community board. Do I wish we had more freedom to discuss certain topics? Yes. But I'm too lazy to go looking for a new site that allows it.

They get plenty of traction until they go poof.

I don't think we disagree on that. I'm not sure what you mean I think whatever people want to discuss or post is fine...including even the fluff. I'd like to see the meatier stuff allowed too. People can choose what they want to participate in.

Sam, you've been around a long time. You are getting crotchety in your old age. 😜 I will probably get points, but I had to say it. We love you!

I tend to view it as a forum for people who used to attend Disney parks but outgrew or got tired of them.
Maybe for people who still occasionally enjoy the parks still. Not sure we should be classified as outgrew or tired, but definitely repriotizing cost and experience.

I sometimes forget this is a Disney Board. We are not really traveling to the Disney or Universal theme parks right now. I come here only for the Community Board. I wish there was a general travel board to discuss domestic and international travel.

eta: I did use this board for all of our previous Disney and Universal travel plus our cruise, and did book with Dreams Unlimited. :)

I wish more non Disney travel got greater traction here. It's so hard to find like minded travel peeps and I wish those who branched out more would post about it and share ideas. Sometimes I feel like when I post off topic it lands flat, so hesitate to post again.

There are posters on the cruise forum that do a lot of international travel. I’ve gotten some great help over there. Most of us combine land trips with cruises. The people over on credit card thread also do a lot of traveling. I rarely post there, but I like reading the thread.

In my opinion the CB can be summed up in one simple phrase.

To each their own.

If you don’t like it or the topics bore or don’t interest you then look elsewhere. If you don’t find an interesting topic then post one that interests you.

To come here and question the CB existence and not bring anything to the party is like pissing up a rope!!!

This is where I am and why I enjoy the CB. I'm going to WDW in February for the first time since 2012. I like talking about Disney but also about other stuff with folks who are Disney-minded as they tend to be a friendly lot.

ME TOO. Maybe we should start our own category? I spend several weeks each year in Europe and am a member of a number of Expat groups on FB but it would be nice to swap tips here too especially as we all go to different places. e.g. I tend to spend most of my time in Europe in Poland and Germany with occasional stints in Italy and Czechia.
