...you received after expaining DCV to someone? Especially after you thought you did a good job of walking them through it.

Both of mine were in 1994.

1) My mom-in-law wanted to know if other people used the room while I was there! Can you imangine relaxing on the patio and Bill and Alice Watson from Columbus, Ohio walk in to do some laundry and get a snack from the fridge?

2)My friend was planning a trip to WDW. I was not using my points that year, and since he had a family of six, I suggested he look into renting them (at cost ,of course). The day after I thought I gave a pretty good explanation and showed him printed material (with pictures), I received a phone call from him.
Me: Hello
Him: HI. My wife has a question about the Time Share.
Me: ok, What is it?
Him: Is is air conditioned?

I know what you mean! We haven't really had a good funny/ strange question, but I remember when we told my parents they were SOOOOOO worried. They thought we had bought into some timeshare scheme where we'd be stuck going to some dumpy fleabag year after year, same week after week. Needless to say they finally saw the light after we just took them on a Hawaii exchange. "You mean we're staying here because of your DISNEY timeshare???!!! It's so beautiful and first rate! Now they are looking forward to seeing the Boardwalk with their grand-daughter in the future! :D

Your two stories were pretty funny, Jack!

With great excitement, I told a friend all about DVC. I talked about the annual allotment of points, the 41 years of trips I can take, the vast choices available, and even showed a point chart and some pictures. I purposely took it pretty slowly, because it's a lot to understand for the first time. Well, when I was all done, my friend sat in silence for a little while. Then she said, "Don't you think that $12,000 is an awful lot to pay for just one Disney World trip?"

Needless to say, I had to start over again... ;)

Boo and Travelbug:

Those questions and concerns seem so innocent and well meaning to the people expressing them. But it really does pop our balloon after we do a big song and dance about DVC. Thanks for your responses.

I'm surprised our fellow DVCers did not come up with more. I guess everyone is planning trips or going from Spring fever to Summer doldrums.

We explain about points, explain about staying at WDW for 42 years, explain about the exchanges we can do - and they just want to know why we would want to go to the same place year after year........well, my response is "how much does the Jersey shore change every year and yet you still go back year after year, blow anywhere from $1-3,000 for a place to stay where you have to bring your own pots, pans, linens, etc." That shuts them up real fast!!!

Last year we brought my parents with us for a week in a 2-bedroom villa at BWV. After about an hour in the room, and after having previously explained DVC and the point system until I'm blue in the face, I noticed them having a little meeting near the doorway. Suddenly the whispering stopped and they both came stomping over to me demanding to know why I hadn't told them we had to pay an additional $865 per night. :D Apparently the rack rates for the 2-bedrooms are on a chart near the front doorway and they thought we had to pay the posted prices on top of using our 'points'. :D
Talk about a role reversal - "Ok, mom, dad. Let's go over this again."

I've explained to people that we can stay on Disney property and Vero Beach and Hilton Head and exchange points per night and exchange a week with II and go on the DCL and then they say," I don't think I'd want to go to Disney every year." I'm thinking, no you just don't think. Also, my brother-in-law says no way would he want a kitchen in his room, he wants to eat out three times a day when he's on vacation. Forget the extra room and conveniences. I feel sorry for his 5 and 2 year old, hope they like to sit an hour or more three times a day. Oh well, that's why we can afford to vacation once or twice a year at nice places.

It's the same question, over and over, from the same people, often during the same conversation: And you get these points again EVERY year? No matter how many times I explain it they still think once I use them up, they're gone! I guess maybe it sounds too good to be true and they think I've fallen for some big rip-off!

This is exactly why I don't bother to explain DVC to anyone. If they want to know about it I give them a very brief explanation and tell them I would be happy to give them the number to get info on their own. This way I leave it up to the pro's at DVC to deal with it. I'm too busy planning my next vacation to try to explain this to the unknowing or unwilling.

These are great...love 'em!

When we purchased DVC, I thought my mother was going to shriek in horror (like when I told her I was going to a DIS meet with people from the Internet :earseek: ), but she sat there nodding, and nodding, and nodding, and then when I was done...since it seemed a little odd that she seemed to understand it all...I said "do you understand??" and she shook her head and said, "no". So I gave up.

I get that same thing about "every year at WDW??". Pre-DVC, when we were going on our 2nd trip to WDW (2 years after the first), my FIL was almost disgusted..."you know, there ARE other places to go"...and they've been going to Bermuda every year (or more) at least since I've known DH (22 years). Sheesh!!

We get the same statement:

"Are you going to Disney - AGAIN - this year? Why go there - there are other places you can go?"

Ok - we went to the shore (NJ Beach) this summer for a week - just to try something different. I am sorry, it is just not the same. Walking back and forth on the boardwalk. I would rather do it walk the boardwalk in Disney.

When we bought into DVC, we did not have kids yet. Now with two girls (5 and 3) - it is the best investment we ever did. Can't wait to go home in October.
