It seems weird to me that it would cost 200 hundred dollars more for a category 8 room when neither has a veranda if I am right? So what is the main difference.

Deck 1 category 9 rooms have 2 small portholes. Deck 2 category 9 rooms have 1 large porthole and are just like the category 8 rooms which are located on higher decks.
I am a fan of deck 2 cat 9 rooms and especially like being far forward. There's a hidden bonus with some of these rooms. The ones in the curvature of the bow have a few extra feet of length between the couch and the outer wall which we found handy for stashing our backpacks, shoes, etc. Of course, this makes the room have a few more sq. feet than you'd typically find in other cat 8 or 9 rooms as well.
IMHO. cat 9 rooms are the best value on the ship outside of the secret porthole rooms (which aren't so secret and hard to get).
I'll add the only way I'd ever pay for a cat 8 room over a cat 9 is if the only available cat 9 were directly under Rockin' Bar D/Wavebands. I couldn't tolerate the thumping bass noises one hears thru the ceiling in rooms directly under those nightclubs.
