What's the deal with light switch activators?

on the new ships, you have to put a card into a slot on the wall to turn on the lights in your room. They want you to use your room key, so the lights arent on while you are out. Any credit/membership/library card will work. we put a magnet on the back of a card and stuck it to the wall when we left the room.

They do the lights as 5Texans stated, but it also turns off the TV(s) and reduces the air conditioning output.

You say on the new ships, we've only been on the dream how is it on the older ships?

Only the lights and the TV are controlled by the switch. The air conditioner is not effected.

we just bring a spare card to leave in the slot. problem solved.

I always hang onto one of the KTTW cards from our previous cruise and use it. When we leave the room, we take it out and put it on the shelf in the closet. That way neither of us will forget our cards when leaving the room.
