What's the chance of DVC limiting to your home resort?

What do you think are the chances, really, of DVC limiting where you stay to only your home resort? We're among those few who never stay at our home resort and don't want to. I know, "Buy where you want to stay", and we thought we did, but after one stay there, we don't want to go back, and also, once DH stayed at OKW, now he won't go anywhere else. It'll be a few years until we can see our way clear financially to sell VWL and buy OKW, but til then, I'm very nervous about all this talk I hear about DVC possibly limiting reservations to only your home resort. Think it's really possible/realistic?

I wouldn't be overly concerned about the WDW resorts. The turmoil of the Disney Company being the subject of hostile bids is the only reason the "alert" level has gone up. I don't forsee a new company selling DVC seperate from selling the parks and/or hotels. DVC is very profitable for Disney so they would hang on to it or sell it as a package. There is an outside chance that a new owner might sell Vero and/or HHI but I don't think that would be on the top of anyone's "things to do" list if they were trying to swallow the Disney Company. ;)

If it happens, it won't happen in the near future. DVC still has product, and they can not afford the bad publicity. I feel all resorts are safe as long as DVC continues to market new product.

We don't know what the future will bring, but realistically, I don't see the DVC system changing anytime soon...at least as long as SSR is selling...and it has a few years to go before construction is complete since it will be in phases similar to the construction of OKW.

I don't see any financial advantage for Disney or whoever might take them over to limit resort-hopping. The 11-month/7 month system works very well, and makes it easier to level the resort loads overall. Not to worry.

I wouldn't care if we were limited to only our home resort. We own at OKW and have stayed at the BWV and did not enjoy it. We have no desire to go anywhere else.

I would feel bad for those folks who do not like their home resort and like to hop around, but not much we can do about it.

Not even sure where this rumor started. Sounds like someone just starting to get people all riled up.

I agree with Pam. I think the greater likelihood is that HH and VB could be sold off at some future time.

38 years is a loooooong time for ownership / management changes to impact the overall philosophy of either the Walt Disney Corp or DVC.

I remember saying here many times and many years ago that one reason to buy where you want to stay and not fall prey to Disney's lies when they were trying to sell VB was that while I consider the possibility remote, HH and/or VB would be most likely candidates if anything ever was sold off.

Looks like its still very remote, but maybe not quite as remote as it was a few years ago.

I concur with this statement; we bought where we knew we would want to stay if resort-hopping were to go away in the future.

Well I feel extremely sorry for VB and HH owners if that happens. If sure many bought with the intention of staying at WDW, too. And I'm also sure the guides used that as a selling point. Any VB or HH owners care to coemmnt on thsi matter?

My worry is if it gets sold out to anotehr timeshare comapny such as Mariott that that wodul open the door to all their owners being able to book at the DVC resorts making ti hard to book anywhere else after your proirity window or changing your dates for that matter.

I can see where the buy where you wnat to stay most is a valubale tip. I can "live" with BCV. LOl But, I coudl ahve also lived with VWL. With that resort being so small I can see it being next t impossible to book there if such a thing were to happen.

I did want to mention I looked at the mariott timeshare website. They have very lovely resorst at soem great places. I do wonder how they wodul value our poinst comapred to theri points since their sysytem is different than ours.
I also didn't see any studios, mainly one and two bedrooms. Those with poinst little liek mine (200) might ahve a harder time.

I wonder what their charing fee is to book outside your hoem resort?

I'm not an owner at either resort, but I know I've read posts from people who were encouraged to buy Vero very recently with the promise that they could always reserve a WDW resort at 7 months.

IIRC, the Guides also tended to gloss-over the exhorbitant dues being charged at VB.

Try not to worry about this. It may never happen and it's not under our control.

P.S. CNN just posted that Comcast isn't interested in Disney at the current price - too costly. It's fun to speculate, but not worth getting upset so early in the process.

COMCAST: Disney Now Too Costly

I think Marriott charges $69 to book outside your home resort.

If it happens - remember this site has a DVC rental/TRADE board - I don't think anyone would have a real problem.

I am pretty sure that enough WDW DVC resort owners will want to trade to HH/VB - so don't worry until something happens.

the only problem I would have if you own at VB and are using it to trade to OKW (which I did) - the point cost at VB is the highest, the point cost at oKW is the lowest - it was silly - so I sold VB - I had brought another timeshare along the Panhandle - so we still get out beach vacations - they are just much cheaper.

Although I have never stayed at my home resort, roughing it at VWL won't be the worst thing in the world.:teeth:

Yes....I agree (I'm an SSR owner). I think we're really lucky because all WDW DVCs are wonderful in their own ways. I really don't think there is any way to lose there.

In all fairness, this topic is usually brought up in regards to contract matters. And the bottom line is that if it's not in your contract, you're not guaranteed it.

This applies to all sorts of things with DVC...pool hopping, free valet parking, reserving at other DVC resorts, discounts, etc. All these are used to sell new DVC properties, and can be discontinued by Disney without any legal recourse by the owners.

I don't think anyone is trying to rile up anybody else.

All we are trying to do is advise people that they should realize that, in essence, they are buying the rights to stay at a resort for a certain amount of time/points. Almost everything after that is a perk.

Do I think DVC will stop resort-sharing reservations? No...not in the foreseeable future.

I don't think they'd change it in the foreseeable future either. The ability to stay at other resorts besides your home one is a nice draw.

To the OP, did you ever thinkof selling your VWL points and using that money to buy a resale at OKW?

Oh, yes-and that's exactly what we're going to do. But not right now. We just bought a new house and our present one hasn't sold (I know, not too bright of us). Also, we had to mortgage our purchase. So right now we've already got a full plate. But we're counting down the time til the mortgage is paid off, and then resale on OKW, here we come!

Simba's Mom, I remember your original post about your bad experience at VWL. Personally, I think any of the resorts can have an off day, but more often than not, DVC will deliver a good experience... no matter what resort it is.
That being said, we certainly all have our different likes and dislikes. We visited VWL, and looked at the models before we purchased. We absolutely loved it! Since we assumed that all DVC resorts would live up to the same high level service, that part of the decision was a wash. We bought specifically on our taste for theme and theming.

I am sorry you are disappointed with VWL, and I am glad to see that you plan to buy OKW. :D
