Hello Ft. Wilderness Fans-

The TCD gang is back from a quick three night trip to the Fort. We arrived on August 3, and left on August 6th. The last time we had visited was in mid-March. So, here is my report, focusing on what is new, different, or interesting at the Fort:

We arrived around noon on Friday, and were assigned to site 1023. We stayed on the 1000 loop for the first time last Thanksgiving, and thoroughly enjoyed the location and set-up of this loop. This is a full hook-up loop, so no cable TV for the TCD kids. We were able to receive all of the major broadcast networks, and a bunch of other networks- about 20 channels in all- with a pair of rabbit ears. Truthfully, I have grown to prefer the full hook up loops over the preferred loops. The preferred loops are always crowded, and it seems like most of them are pet loops now. Not that I have anything against pets, but things are much quieter on the non pet loops.

Anyway, here is our site:

This site was the last one on the loop, and faced the main campground road: Ft Wilderness Trail. There were cars, buses, golf carts, bikers and walkers going by all day- but the noise was not bad, and it was fun to watch all of the activity at the Fort in the summer. Things go on a lot later in the summer- as it is warmer, and there are a lot more kids around.

One of the first new things that I noticed is that there has been quite a bit of clearing done on some of the loops. I noticed this most on the 1100 loop. That loop used to have a lot of brush and tree growth between the sites, giving them a lot of privacy. Granted, a lot of that vegetation was non-native, nuisance vegetation, but it still provided privacy. Take a look at these photos from the 1100 loop:

Picture043.jpg

Picture003.jpg

The photos above were taken from the 1100 loop toward the 2100 cabin loop. There is now nothing blocking the view of the cabins from the campsites. Not good for folks in the cabins or for folks in the campsites.

Picture012.jpg

The photo above is taken from the cross walk for the path that crosses Fort Wilderness Trail, heading toward the 1100 loop. I know that you used to not be able to see the campsites as clearly as you walked toward the 1100 loop. Now, everything is more open.

Another place where the clearing was noticeable was on the 1200 and 1300 loops. This is a photo taken from the roadway that leads back to the 1600-1900 loops. The bus stop would be to the right of this photo, and we are looking straight ahead, across Big Pine Drive to the 1200-1300 loops. See the comfort station there? And all of the campsites? This all used to be shielded by various plant life.

Picture015.jpg

Now everything in these areas is more opened up.

Take a look at these photos of the path that cuts through the woods next to the 1200-1300 loops, heading toward the Meadows trading post. This used to be very wooded and private. Now, you can see clear into the 1300 loop, and all the way across the water to the pool.

Here is a photo from the bridge behind the Meadows trading post, looking at the 1300 loop. It used to be that you could not see the campsites from the bridge, but now you can.

Since things grow fast in Florida, these areas will eventually fill back in. The clean-up makes everything look a lot nicer, but I don’t like the loss of privacy.

The next update concerns the one of the 2000 loop comfort stations. It is being completely renovated. It is closed, and all of the adjacent sites around it were vacant all weekend. On Monday morning, I saw why. There must have been 20 cars and trucks parked in all of those sites from the crew working on the renovation. It looks like this will get done quickly, and it also looks like this will now be one of the nice, new style comfort stations.

Here is a photo of the 2000 loop comfort station:

It has already been reported on this board that the Settlement Trading Post is currently closed for renovation. We received a letter about this at check in stating that the Settlement Trading Post would be closed until mid-August. I assumed that maybe they were doing some cleaning, painting, etc. But, on Friday night, I took a peek in the window, and saw this:

Picture093.jpg

What you are looking at here is a photo from the corner window closest to the dock. So, the main entrance is on the right in this photo. As you can see, the place is gutted. All of the shelves, counters, cash registers, etc., are gone. I don’t think that this is just going to be a cosmetic touch up, and I also will be really surprised if they re-open by mid August, but I guess that is possible if they had everything pre-arranged.

I have more, but I will go ahead and close this post. Watch this thread for more news.

Great post! Love the photos - thanks for sharing them! I agree about preferring privacy when camping, but like you said stuff grows quick there...(esp. the area between the site loop and the cabin loop!!...oh my).

Wow TCD, absolutely great post! I think a bunch of people haven't seen this post because they probably think it is a noobie asking if there is anything new at the Fort and not a trip report!

A couple thoughts on your post....

1) Wow, they definitely have cleared out a bunch of the ground cover. I noticed about 2 years ago that they had started doing this, but it looks like it went into full swing. I imagine they are mainly doing it because it helps with fire hazards, plus as you mentioned it will eventually grow back.

2) You're not kidding they gutted the Settlement Trading Post! Wow, I thought perhaps they were just cleaning it up, but I imagine the whole place is going to look different next time we visit. It's not surprising that they decided to change it considering it is the main store and located at the docks where visitors will frequent. I would imagine the Settlement Trading Post gets many more non-Fort campers than the Meadow Trading Post. It will be interesting to see how they change it. I can't imagine they gutted it entirely just to put it all back the same exact way.

Once again, absolutely loved reading your trip report, if you have any more info please post it!

Sorry to ask such a stupid question, but where did you get rabbit ears? We also have a full hook-up this year instead of preferred, and I have 3 sons and a husband who need to watch football (we will be there in Dec.) I remember my parents having these, but can you still get them in stores? Thanks for the help!!:thumbsup2

Just go to any Walmart, Target, Sears, any kind of store that sells TV stuff really and you'll be able to find rabbit ears. Just look in the TV section and they will be there.

I think some of the clearing was done to make sites wider to accomodate slide outs and awnings. I have similar pics from our trip in June, the clearing on the 1100 loop was most noticeable. We had one of the sites in the 1100 that backed up to the cabins during a trip last year, the only privacy issue we had was people walking through our site from the 2100 loop to get to the meadows area. There wasnt much privacy in that area anyways.

always like seeing yer posts tcd.................

i usually ask the grounds crew what they are doing and they said they are having problems with potato vine at the fort.......growing al over and killing trees and bushes........

he said nothing about fire danger........besides if you have ever burned pine needles (like the ones they use for mulch at the fort) you will be shocked to see how flamable they are

There is always fire danger at the Fort, especially during the summer. That is when everything is dry and the constant thunderstorms bring lightning. There were really bad fires in Central Florida the beginning of this summer, and the Fort was extremely dry and lucky that nothing happened.

There have been some bad fires at the Fort over the last 10 years, and the fires spread quickly. Removing the ground cover of course will help reduce the speed at which the fires can spread. There are probably multiple reasons why they do it but fire prevention will always be one of them.

Why do you think they don't allow open fires anymore? ;)

I cant imagine what the smoke would be like with 700 campsites having fire pits. I think the fire pits were stopped for the same reason that swimming isnt allowed at the lake, its just too much liability for Disney. The media pounces on each and every tragedy at WDW while the same things go on with the same if not greater frequency all over the country. They just dont need the PR grief.
Plus you can always go down to the campfire singalong and enjoy some good old fashioned fun ! :thumbsup2

i can't seem to get my edit button to work.......

the grounds guy said they were doing it because of all the fires lately at the fort........ and the needles they are using come from a fire retarded tree.....;)

Cant we just call it a "fire challenged" tree ... :lmao:

BTW... great post TCD.. love those pics, its almost like being home.

You want more- I got more.

So, Sunday night I am sitting around my campsite minding my own business (which does not happen too often), when a huge blue tour bus comes driving around the loop. Not an RV- a tour bus, like the rock stars use. The guy just drives around the loop like he is looking for something, and he drives off.

So, the TCD kids all want to know who is in the bus. Maybe Zac Efron?

Well, we can't leave any stone unturned, so we hop on the cart and try to find out what is going on.

We find the tour bus parked in the back of the 1800 loop. Here it is:

Picture026.jpg

For a minute I was afraid the millionaires were invading again :rotfl2: (you had to be there- some of you regulars will remember what I am talking about).

So, on the side of the bus door is painted Big Daddy Weave, LLC. It just so happens that this is a Contemporary Christian band that I am familiar with. So, no wild rock band- sorry. And, as far as we can tell, it is just the driver there, washing the bus. I went back to spy the next morning just before 8 am, and the bus was already gone! So this was just a guy looking for a nice place to park the bus for a night.

Here is something new. You know the parking passes you get when you check in? Now they put your name on there. So, I look at the parking pass for the bus, it says Jim Jones, or some other fake name. It also says that the bus is checking out the next day. It looks like maybe this bus driver just took a little break at the Fort. Good for him

I'm not sure I like the idea of names going on parking passes. It might give someone more information than I want them to have. Maybe this isn't a good idea at the Fort where people have their kids there with them, and having a name might give a bad guy something that he could use for the wrong reasons.

Anyway, while we were stalking the tour bus, another big rig turns into the 1900 loop. It is a big bus painted with University of Miami colors. I thought maybe Colson39 had gotten himself a new rig, so we followed that rig too, here are the shots:

Picture027.jpg

Picture024.jpg

It wasn't Colson39 in there. Or the UM football team. Just a 'Cane fan.

Oh, and as long as we are looking at interesting rigs, check this one out:

Picture058.jpg

Sorry, it is a little dark. But, what this looked like was that someone attached parts from a newer VW Eurovan to an old VW bus. A lot of work, and an interesting result.

And, one more. This tent was set up in front of a trailer on the 700 loop. You could see just inside the flaps that there was a pink golf cart in parked in there. I wanted to hop off of our cart and open the flaps to take a photo, but the TCD DD's protested. They get embarassed by their old man (and trust me, that happens a lot), so you just get this photo.

Picture016.jpg

So, how is that for celebrity sightings. The tour bus of a popular Christian band, and Miss Piggy's camper!

TCD

P.S. Be sure to check back, I have more news to report.

Hey, I've seen that Kermit/Miss Piggy tent before! One of the Dis'ers owns that, they also own a Muppets golf cart. They have posted that picture before, they are definitely from the DIS (unless they have the exact same tent as someone else...lol).

And man oh man do I wish that Canes camper was mine!!! ;)

Great pics, I will be following this thread.

tcd ..... i to miss the" invasion of the millionaires" ....

when we started that thread .....colson had a full head of hair.........;)

keep em coming

And you didn't have as much to complain about ;)

Don't be jealous of my sexy shaved head. It's the reason I have that beautiful blonde draped all over me...lol :P

Did you ever notice that wives are always much better looking than their husbands? I guess it's a good thing for us they are willing to compromise.

I always tell my wife that I married up.

I do want to hear more about the ex girlfriend you pushed out of the golf cart ? You brought it up a while back and then never talked more about it.

Maybe they put in new flooring in the trading post?
