Whats happening mid May?

We will be at the AKL may 10-14 and it has been interesting to see basically all the hotels are pretty booked for that time frame,even on Expedia. I originally was going to go May 3-7 and switched to the later dates because I figured the first weekend of the Celebration would be packed. But it seems like the 2nd week is much busier. Considering no kids are off from school,anyone know a reason for this?
I feel lucky I got a Fl resident rate for the AKL for my dates!

The Happiest Celebration On Earth starts May 5th at all of Disney's parks. This is to commemerate Disneyland's 50th Birthday. I believe this is probably the reason.

if you read my post again, I am aware of the Celebration starting on the 5th,I am questioning why the 2nd weekend of the Celebration might be MORE crowded then the first? I am thinking maybe there is some other event at the world the weekend of the 13th?

I read that Regis and Kelly were going to be at MK or MGM sometime around the 11th of May. Just what I heard, but if this is true that's probably why everything is booked

Sorry I didn't make myself more clear. The birthday celebration isn't a one week thing, it lasts for over a year I believe, so I think attendance will be up during the entire time. JMO

May 15th is the Danskin Triathlon at WDW and a lot of people are makeing it part of a longer trip so some of the booking would be for people doing that. Like mine.

Mothers Day is the first Sunday this year....the Flower and Garden Show is in Epcot also!! Which is great

I read somewhere that people planning to go in first week of May decided to push their trips back until after the 5th to wait for the new attractions, etc.

In general, the massive advertising campaign is working well for May.

Also I think there is a big oncology convention the weekend of the 14th, and some people may be adding dates onto their trips. (I doubt this is the reason it is busy but I thought I would throw it out there. I am sure there are conventions constantly at the Orlando convention center plus they don't stay at WDW.)

I am going the same week. I feel your pain, as I switched my trip too in an effort to avoid the press week.

Memeroial week-end is the last week-end in May. that is the only long week-end I know of

It is a long weekend for Palm Beach county schoolchildren.For some crazy reason,even though we had to make up 12 hurricane days and the kids have to return to school for 1 last day the Tuesday after Memorial Day, we are offFriday the 13th of May . Perhaps that convinced some parents to skip the opening weekend of the Happiest Celebration and go the following week.

We are going May 7 -14 too. We decided to go that week because my daughter get Friday off at her school. I don't know if this is all the school in nj or just ours.

I wouldn't use Expedia as a measure of hotel availability. Hotels have contracts with companies like Expedia and Hotels.com that allow them to sell only a certain number of rooms per day. Once the room block is sold out with the internet company, it doesn't necessarily mean the actual hotel is sold out. We do this every weekend at my hotel. We allow Expedia anywhere between 5 and 10 rooms to sell on a Saturday night. Once they've sold their rooms, that's it. Expedia would be sold out for that nite while the hotel may still be selling.
