What's for dinner? Was it "budget"?

thank you all for the suggestions:goodvibes I knew you'd be up to the task.

We can't really do tomato based products on competition days...it would not look good to have stains on half the uniforms;)

We had a mexican bar for the final competition last year...it was very well received.

All meals have to be ready to just keep warm (in warming trays/coolers) because the only competition anywhere near us is one town over and not even really close to anybody's stove.

See why we need Dinner: Impossible??:rotfl2:

last night was "It's too hot for any food night":rotfl:

Not so unique, but how about fried chicken, potato salad, macaroni salad and such? Arby's roast beef sandwiches? You might find a business that would donate the food to the band. Maybe you could talk the principal into thanking the businesses on the school marquee and/or a write up (or free advertisement) in the school paper. Good advertisement! Just some thoughts.

Last night we had sloppy joes, ff, and green beans. Tonight with the left over sloppy joes (I made a double batch) we're having burritos. I'm adding a can of light red kidney beans, drained and rinsed to the mix. Putting the mixture into tortillas, rolling and topping with American cheese. Into the microwave for about 35 seconds each. Yummy. :) Don't know about the sides yet. Maybe we'll have some fruit afterwards. I don't think anyone is super hungry.

I have thought about the business thing but at one of the competitions the kids saw one of their rivals getting Chick-Fil-A and their reaction had me on the verge of tears. Get this "Those kids are so unlucky...we've got the best meals because our parents made them." (There was no way the amount they had of Chick-Fil-A was going to feed the entire band either:upsidedow ).

That sloppy joe thing sounds awesome!! I never seem to have leftovers but maybe if I purposely did 2 batches that would work.

That's the sweetest thing for a child to say!

Have you made the, "Suddenly Salad", pasta salad before? I made it, I think it was Italian and added some cooked and diced chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, and I've even added pepperoni a different time. It was really good! That's my summer in a pinch meal. :) Maybe something like that would work. It is filling!

Tonight was a weird night, hubby and middle son had tickets for a local high schools baseball game. He took 3 other boys on my son's baseball team (hubby is coach) and they are having names announced and get to shag balls. They are also going to feed them hot dogs, chips and cokes, so I don't have to worry about them eating. My daughter is working concession stand at ballpark so she will eat something fast there. My youngest and I came home from dentist appts and are eating beanie weenies..Yummy meal..:lmao:

we have to stop running errands at supper time!!:upsidedow Yesterday was the chicken skewers again...not as good as the last time but we did enjoy them.

Tonight there is only 2 of us eating at home....and I've got freebie sandwiches and will probably make mac & cheese for the 2 of us.

Last night...not budget. I took oldest dd to Moes between a doctors appt and choir concert. $10. The youngest and husband had eggs, hash browns and fruit.

Tonight is:
Spaghetti Sauce: 1.00
Sp Noodles: .50
Hamburger: 1.00
Brussel Sprouts: 1.00
French Bread: 1.00

4.50...not too bad.

Tonight is chicken ceasar salads. Grilled chicken seasoned with Adobo (1.99/lb), romaine hearts (1.00), ceasar dressing, grated cheese, croutons, and a loaf of Italian bread (1.59).

Not even remotely budget. DS turned 18 today, so I made some of his favorites. Korean BBQ'd beef and Korean BBQ'd pork, Korean noodles, rice, and Korean style vegies. Unfortunately, the meat was expensive because I didn't have any in the freezer, and they weren't what was on sale. You can make this with cheap cuts, but since it was his birthday we went with tri-tip and pork loin. For dessert, we had a Dairy Queen cake. Mmmmm . . .

Tonight we're having grilled marinated pork tenderloin (2.99/lb), a box of suddenly salad (.20 w/ a coupon), and a veggie (whatever I have in the freezer) (.50). A pretty cheap meal for the four of us!

(I'm thinking maybe we'll go get some ice cream after dinner, using a gift certificate and coupon. Shhhhh! Don't tell anyone!:goodvibes )

I consider last night a "victory" in the war against breaking the budget......We were trying to figure out what to have for dinner, and on first glance we didn't "have" a lot in our cupboards/fridge. I considered running to the store or to fast food (a ten mile round trip as we live in the boonies) but instead I took a closer look at what we had on hand....and decided to make breakfast for dinner. We had plenty of eggs (they were buy 2 dz for $5 get a dz free) and lots of Krusteaz pancake mix (we buy it in huge bags at Costco) With some toast and slice cantaloupe on the side, I fed five of us for what I would estimate to be under $5 AND saved the gas I would have used up to get junk. :woohoo:

We had hotdogs and chips for lunch. Tonight we're having popcorn. Typical Sunday night fare!

Popcorn for dinner? Does that fill you up? I would just be wanting something else 10 minutes later. Do you make some special popcorn with lots of stuff?

I just make Stove Popped Orville Redenbachers popcorn. We've done this since I was a little kid. It doesn't feel like Sunday night without it. Sometimes a Pepsi on the side too. (just like grandma used to feed us) We usually eat big on Sunday afternoons... just not today!

sounds like a lovely tradition. :goodvibes

tonight was our bbq night:

hamburgers, hot dogs: about $2 worth
catfish: splurge at $2.50
corn: $1
buns: 50 cents
baked beans: heck if I know
potatoes: another splurge at already cooked at $2.50 (hurt my dominant wrist last night and can't do a lot)

so about $10 not too bad!!

Last night we had hamburgers stuffed with bacon and cheese (pre made at the grocery, but they were a "special today" so I bought them and froze them)- $3-something for four burgers. We had leftover pasta salad, and I made Marinated Green Bean Salad (my dh's favorite!). It was a good dinner, and everyone enjoyed it, which makes it even better!:goodvibes Oh, and we were finally able to eat outside on our porch! That was the best!! We sat there well past dinner. We haven't lingered at the dinner table like that in a long time!

.

Tonight is stir fry with chicken.

1 lb chicken $2
1/2 c. stir fry sauce .70 cents
2 bags frozen stir fry veggies $2
1/2 can pineapple (maybe) .40 cents
rice .50 cents

$6.60 - not bad![/QUOTE]

LOVED IT!!!

We spent most of yesterday at the lake ( http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1837848 ), and snacked on picnic-type foods all day. When we got home, no one was really hungry, so we just finished off some left-overs from the fridge.

Tonight we are having pre-breaded chicken patties. This is the end of a bag of them that I got at Costco. The bag cost $13, but we have gotten 4 different meals out of it, so about $3.25 for each meal - not too bad! Along with them, we will have mashed potatoes and gravy, a vegetable - probably peas, and a salad or a relish tray.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!

I got two meals from one...
This is yesterday's meal:
Baked chicken-$3.50
roasted potatoes-.50
carrots-.25
frozen beans and squash-.50
for a grand total of $4.75.

Today is chicken pot pie. I used the leftover chicken from yesterday. So, I cooked off the meat and made some stock. Added the vegetables and the potpie noodles. I could definitely get a 3rd(and even 4th meal) out of it if I freeze the leftovers.

leftover chicken-$0
potpie noodles-$0 free from my mom...she wasn't going to use them
potatoes-.50
onions-.25
carrots-.25
celery-.25
grand total $1.25.

So, I got 2+ meals for around $6. I'm think I did pretty good for myself. Plus, the meals were really tasty too!

This is my first contribution to this thread. I am looking forward to getting some great ideas from everyone.
