What would you put in here?

I have an area up to the lake right next to where I park my van. It's right along one of the outside walls of the lake house and it has a stone edging around it.. For years and years I have tried to get something to grow in there - ANYTHING - but even the weeds don't grow in there because it gets NO sunlight at all..

So - I wanted to make it into a "garden", but one WITHOUT flowers.. What kind of neat things could I put in there? Tomorrow I'm hoping to hit Big Lot and The Dollar Store to see what kind of garden ornaments are available (don't want to spend a lot of money), but thought maybe some of you would have some neat ideas..

Hostas will grow in shade. The actually prefer them. Have you tried them?

I have yet to succeed in killing my hostas and I don't have the greenest thumb.

I agree that hostas are worth a shot. Some of them are really beautiful. Check with mail order companies for the best selection. (Although I'd probably get one or two cheap ones from Home Depot first to see how they do.)

If that doesn't work, how about putting rocks down on the ground? A bird bath would probably be pretty, and you can find ones that are really affordable. I love sun dials, but I guess that wouldn't be a really good option.

I have seen people use different colours of stone/rocks and make patterns in an area of landscaping with the stone/rocks.

It looks kind of cool. You could make curving lines or box shapes and then just fill them in with different colours or types of stone. Then you could put some sort of garden ornament in amongst the designs or a bird bath.

I know you said no flowers but impatients thrive in the deep shade so it would be really pretty if you did a mix of hostas and impatients. You could also do ground cover (pachysandra does well in shade too).

LOL! I take back my answer. I'd get really good lounge chairs and a hidden camera so that you could catch them in the act.
