What would you have done?

Last week, during our mother/daughter trip to DL, we were riding Pirates of the Caribbean. The 3 '20 something' folks in the row right behind us (2 girls, 1 guy), started talking from the get-go about everything but the ride we were on... other rides, their day in the park, their many DL visits, blah blah blah, etc... you name it! They were making us dizzy. My daughter turned around after the 2nd drop and asked them politely to please keep it down. I think we offended them. The guy kept saying "What? What do they want?", but they mostly stopped talking after that. I realize they had just as much right to be on the ride as anyone else, and surely nothing dictates what you can or cannot talk about while riding, but they were ruining our experience. What would you have done? I'm just curious... Were we being selfish?

I don't know whether I would have said anything or not. It really depends on how obnoxious they are, the crowds and how long I had to wait.
That being said, don't feel you are in the wrong for speaking up. Just because someone else may not said something have doesn't make it wrong for you.
I applaud you for speaking up.

Your daughter handled it perfectly. It's rude to talk your way through something like that but people don't always realize they are disrupting others.

I agree with gottalovepluto! I think that's it exactly. People get excited and forget that their behavior is possibly impacting others. I've caught myself doing that at DL and am mortified when I realize that I'm saying something to the person next to me that should be said at another time. Your daughter's response was perfect.

I spent the whole ride listening to two 20-something girls talk about underwear shopping once. It could have been worse I suppose

They could have been just excited about all they had done that day and totally unaware of the fact that they were taking away from someone else's experience, but I feel that your daughter did the right thing by bringing to their attention that their excitement was taking away from the other peoples experience on PoTC. I know how you must feel though. One time my daughter and I were on a Mother/ Daughter trip to DL and we were in line for BTRR and there were a group of teenage girls with their mothers in front of us. The girls kept getting in and out of line to go meet with other friends that were not in line for the ride. Back and forth, back and forth. They were distracting the moms and all the people around them and not paying attention to the line moving ahead of them. I finally said something to them that they need to pay attention to the line moving ahead of them and it was rude to keep pushing out of the line and then back through the line to meet up with their mom. It got very awkward and quiet after I said something. I felt bad afterwards because they were excited and having fun, but at the same time they were being rude to all the people around them. That mom should have said something to them, but after a while, I could see that she was not going to say anything, so I did.

I would have said something before the first drop. Being so loud as to be distracting on the ride isn't their right.

I think I would have said something before the 2nd drop if it bothered me, but talking on POTC doesn't really bother me unless we are in an area where there is talking parts from the ride. I've only really encountered people talking on rides at POTC & Small World. I get more bothered by talking in small world because even though the song annoys me I still want to listen to it in the ride lol.

I wouldn't have said a word. It's not a library and people are allowed to talk. If they were bothering your daughter, I guess she was allowed to say something, but I think people need to get over this idea of having complete silence during rides. They're rides. At an amusement park, not the library at Alexandria.

If they were truly being loud enough to disturb others, your daughter had every right to ask them to quiet down a bit. I hate it when people are rude in general, but I haven't really experienced that at DLR as of yet, honestly.

Which it doesn't sound like that was the case here... They didn't appear to be shouting or swearing from what I read, they were just talking, which is 100% allowed. They can talk about their day at the park, their plans for getting home or their weekend shopping trip. As long as they are not yelling, shouting, being overly obnoxious or swearing, they're not in any kind of fault. But that' just my opinion. One person is disturbed by one thing while someone else isn't. It's all a matter of opinion.

Shouting and swearing is different than what the OP reported. She reported they were talking and annoying them. People have the right to talk. Pirates of the Caribbean is not some sacred space that requires hallowed silence. It is a ride at an amusement park. If you need silence to enjoy a ride, I don't know what to say. It's unreasonable.

A person can always ask, but I guess I would be afraid of their reaction to the request and, so I would not bother to ask. Someone talking on the ride does not distract me unless they are swearing and loud, which is inappropriate at DLR. I still would not say anything because those are the types of people that probably would not react well to such a request.

I doubt I would have said something; it's POTC, after all. It doesn't require quiet to enjoy. Unless they were using inappropriate language, I'd have sucked it up...mostly because there's no reason to ruin someone else's ride just because I was a little annoyed.

Nothing but common courtesy. Talking during a ride (or 'spieling' a ride's dialogue for that matter) is no different than someone talking or repeating dialogue during a movie or theatre performance. And I think most people would agree that it's OK to politely 'hush' those people. Same thing for DL.
