Last night, while I was sound asleep, I thought I heard the doorbell ring. A quick glance at the clock showed 2:00 am so I figured I was dreaming. You guessed it..........a minute or two later I hear it again. This time I'm awake enough to be sure. I turn on the lights and head downstairs, thinking if it's kids 'pranking' they'll leave once they see the lights go on. In my house, the front door has two side windows so you can see outside. I can see just the right side of a man with a baseball cap. Can't really see his face. Since my DD and I were home alone, I called the police. They looked around when they arrived but found nothing. They were very polite but I kept getting the sense that they thought I was just a little 'nutsy' and that their visit was a nuisance. (Never really said this - just a feeling I got.) What do you think? Did I overreact? Was there something else I could have done?

If DH was not home, I would have done the same thing.

Heck no! You pay their salary. If it happens again, call again.

I would have called the police to. You just can't be sure these days. Did you see him drive off or walk?

You most definitely did NOT. I would of done the same thing you did. That is scary though. I wonder who that man was. Did you ever get a look at his face? :confused3

I don't think so. I would have called the police too if some guy was ringing the bell at 2:00 in the morning. I'm sure the police did not think it was a nuisance either. When they came to your house they could see you were alone with your DD. I'm sure they were glad you called and everything turned out okay. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they patrol your neighborhood over the next few days.

I would have hit the panic button on my alarm system--which would ahve called the police.

You DEFNINTELY did the right thing!!

I actually put in a camera security system for this very reason. As a single mom, I'm never able to roll over and punch a DH awake to check for me!! So I have 4 cameras - one at the front of my house, just under the eave, is trained on the front door and porch, one is on the garage and looks down the driveway, one is on the other side of the garage and looks on the back door, and the 4th one is on the back corner of my house and looks out over the back yard. I installed this system when my car was broken into twice in one year and I was hearing about petty crime in our neighborhood. Also, I couldn't see who was at the front door without revealing myself.

This is a great peace of mind for me. I can turn my TV to a particular channel and watch each camera. Of course, I almost had a heart attack the first time I thought I saw someone!! It turned out to be nothing. I use it in the daytime if I'm not expecting someone - I can see if it's my friend who has dropped by, or a stranger selling something, and go to the door or avoid it. I love it!!

You can bet I'd call the police any time I felt unsafe. They might not respond as quickly, but I'd still call.

I wouldn't have even made it down the stairs! You did the right thing by calling the cops.

I would have called the police, too. And I doubt they would have given me a hard time. It could have been a burglar, or it could have been someone who needed help. Either way, the it is the job of the police to deal with those kinds of things.

I don't think I would have called the police, necessarily, but I certainly wouldn't have opened the house.

Calling the police was probably the right thing to do, but I just don't know that I would have done it. I would probably be afraid of feeling stupid, which is really dumb.

you absolutely did the right thing!! I would have done the exact same thing if DH wasn't home! How freaky! Wonder who it was? :confused3

I DEFINITELY would've done the same thing! How creepy! 2AM?!? When did he leave, before the police came or did he run when the police arrived?! Don't feel ridiculous AT ALL! I would've done the same thing (and probably not've been able to sleep after that! :scared1: ) Kudos to you for handling the situation a great way!

I think you did the right thing, but I'm biased. I did that exact thing several years ago in October. It was around 9:30 at night and my DH was out of town on business. The doorbell rang, but when I looked through the window, no one was there!:confused3 I called the police.

Boy was I :headache: when the police showed up and there was a "You got boo'ed" sign on my door!!:rotfl: They were very nice about it, though. ;)

Years ago I lived in a third floor apartment in a quiet upstate NY town. One night around midnight someone was out in the landing trying to open my door. They were fumbling around, I looked out the people hole and saw a very disheveled man staggering around, but he kept coming back trying his key in my door.

So I called the police. By the time they got there, the guy had left and was staggering around in the street in front of my house.

Apparantly he had lived there a few years earlier, and was so intoxicated that he didn't remember he had moved.

They took him home to his wife. I saw one of the cops who had responded a couple days later in the market, he said the guy was pleading with them to take him to jail instead! :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

I always get a little creeped out when someone is at the door after dark. I'd have called the cops, too. But then it would have driven me nuts wondering who it was (like it probably is driving you nuts!) If it was someone you knew, they'd have called or at least called out to you when they saw the lights go on. You might have saved yourself from a really bad situation!

If I were you I definitely would have called the police, even if my husband was home! You did the right thing.
