What would YOU expect to see in the Veterinarians office?

So, we're sitting at the vets, me-my ds13 and my ddog 12. She's a weimaraner, there was also a chocolate lab and some type of shepherd mix. Everyone was pretty well behaved... the chocolate lab was whining to see my dog but it was all under control. A woman comes in- looks around and says, "Oh, dogs." Brilliant statement. She has a child with her of about 4 years old. We all had our dogs on the proverbial "short leash" but the woman was completely paranoid that someone was going to attack her child. She kept saying, "Miranda- we don't know if those dogs like kids." True- and kids should be taught not to approach a strange dog BUT everytime the child shifted her weight from one leg to the other the mother gasped and grabbed her like she was about to run into the street.:lmao: I leaned over to my son and said, "Maddy likes kids with a nice bernaise sauce..." The truth is, Maddy is a retired therapy dog;) Anyway, I found it humorous that someone would be so distressed about seeing dogs at the vets office.

I'd be concerned if I went to the Vet's and there wasn't other animals (including dogs!) in the waiting room:goodvibes

I wonder what the woman expected?:confused3

weird...what type of animal was she bringing in?

She was picking up her 2 cats. It was truly one of the oddest things I have experienced. I can't even convey how freaky she was about there being dogs in the waiting room. Oh, and the room is big enough so they sat away from all the dogs... :confused3

Maybe she'd be better off at a Cat Hospital.

I love seeing all the different animals at the vet's. :goodvibes

I'm thinking you're right!
I understand not being a "dog person" (ok, I don't really understand it but I know some people aren't ;) ) But don't freak about it at THE VETERINARIAN'S OFFICE!:lmao:

Last time we had a vet visit I had to bring both dogs by myself. One is 180 lbs the other 140 lbs. I was all alone in the waiting room when in popped the mailman. I thought he would DIE.:lmao: I said its OK, no worries they are fine. I guess he has some dog issues.:rotfl:

Sounds like the lady didn't expect to see dogs, just cats! A little odd the way she reacted with her child and likely instilling fears of dogs.

The FedEx lady actually came in and left with all her limbs attached! :thumbsup2

I have a cat that absolutly hates dogs and are vet either schedules her when there are no dogs or we sneak her in the back.

For that reason i would rather not see a dog there, but i would much rather see a dog then a snake.

I am admittedly not a dog person. I would have expected to see dogs at the vet, but I would also have cautioned my child not to approach a strange animal. I would have been nervous about my 4 year old's safety being in such close quarters with 3 big dogs.

Some dog owners get complacent about their animals and forget that they might behave differently around strange people in strange surroundings. And just because the dog has never hurt a child before, does not mean he won't now. They are animals, and by their very nature, unpredictable.

My SIL has a dog that is not good around children. She came to stay with FIL to care for him when he was dying from cancer, and she brought the dog with her. We were very cautious about the girls being around the dog, we told them the rules, watched them closely, and the girls and the dog did well for several days. One night when we were getting ready to leave, DD10 went to pet the dog on the top of the head to say good night. That dog leapt from the chair where it was laying, and lunged for her face. Luckily the dog did not bite her, but she did bruise her cheek. There were no second chances after that and the kids and the dog were completely separated for the rest of the visit.

Now if I was that concerned about my child being around those dogs, the vets office is the last place I would bring her.

BUT she was picking up the cats- she didn't have them with her. The tech actually carried them in their carriers out for her.

I was just thinking... most people don't like when we bring in our snake!!

Though I think it's a little strange behavior (maybe there is a bad past experience of some kind?), I'm glad she was being so alert about her child. Neither of our dogs like children, and I absolutely hate it when kids just come up and start petting them...ok...when my dog nips you I won't feel bad. (This happens with family members, so yes, I do have a right to not feel bad for them ;))

My bestfriend is a Veternarian, and her office actually has seperate waiting rooms for Cats and Dogs, you'd be suprised how many people are afraid/allergic/don't want to be around the other species.

A bit OT here but I had my car serviced at the dealer the other day and in the waiting room there were two customers who came in during my 2.5 hour wait with Dogs on leashes. Really? at the car dealer's service waiting room?

I was really surprised, didn't realize this was a place people brought in dogs. I would expect to see them at the vets office obviously but not at the Saab dealer.

That would be nice, my vet's waiting room is the size of a postage stamp!!

I went in twice with my cat & there were dogs there. Both times, they were all well behaved, like they knew it was neutral territory. :grouphug:

Two thoughts come to mind:
1--Perhaps her daughter is not well-trained enough at 4yo to NOT wander over too close to strange dogs.

2--Mom is extremely fearful of dogs herself.

I would much rather see a parent go a little overboard telling their kids not to go near dogs they don't know. My Minky is a very nice poodley gentleman, but he's big a small bear. It amazes me how many parents let their kids RUN UP TO HIM. He has never tried to bite anyone, and to his credit Minky just stands there real pretty while the kids pet him all over. But really, I would NEVER have let my children approach a strange dog without asking permision from me and the owner first!
