Like a lot of you out there I have hobbies and things I like to spend my free time doing. Mine tend to focus around computer based projects -modding on the Dis, video/photo editing and web design.
Lately I have been working on a cupcake website, but because it was for DW it was more a labour of love than anything else.
Since then a friend of mine has approached me and asked me to put a site together for him. He and his wife are starting a new business selling teddy bears such as Steiff and Boyds and have been to see a number of web designers without any success. Of all the ones they have been to see only one has got back to them with a quote of nearly £6000
- this to build a site of more than 500 pages.
As a sample I put together a home page for them so they could see what it might look like - you can see this HERE - going so far as to design the logo and putting in more than 10 hours up to this point on that one page alone. They were suitably happy with what I have done and have now said they definitely want me to continue and want to know how much I will charge them for it.
This is where I am having problems. I want to do it because I enjoy this sort of thing - but am worried that it will become a bit of an albetros. Also the fact he is a mate makes it harder as well. I am not a pro so would never charge the rates they do - but I can't do it for nothing as it will be taking up a huge amount of my time of the next few weeks, to say nothing of the time taken to update it once they start getting new stock in.
So my question is what would you do if you were me. Go for it and be flattered that he asked me - or walk away as it cold be opening a big can of worms?
ALL opinions appreciated
