What would you do in this situation?

I think if you speak to the school, you can make arrangements to pay the school when the employer's reimbursement comes through. At least talk to them.

We've gone through all our options with the school and they're pretty inflexible (this is an online school -- he's getting an accelerated degree, then getting his MBA in a brick & mortar). He's close to being done, so we just need to muddle through until May!

The Army does this to us all the time. At the moment, we are still owed over $7000, but instead of paying that, DFAS (Defense Finance Accounting System) has decided to pay dh for a travel voucher he already received back in July.

And last year, DFAS simply lost track of him all together. His paystubs said "Location unknown" and he continued to receive his combat pay for months after he came home.

And then there was the month that he re-enlisted, but DFAS didn't process that paperwork, so they just didn't pay him at all.

We tell them when they've screwed up, but most of the time it cannot be fixed right away, or without screwing up his pay even further. So we just put any overpayments or duplicate payments into our savings account, and wait for them to take it back. (Which they always do, eventually, once they've pulled their heads out of their you-know-where's)

Pay it back asap, and document the process in writing/via email. My dad and 2 other employees got overpaid way back when. My dad was the only one to follow up and make sure that the error was corrected. He said that it was a big PITA to get it corrected. The 2 people who kept the "found money" and said nothing got in BIG trouble later on, though. It will catch up with you eventually...even if it doesn't, keeping it is bad karma IMHO.

Where I work, they would typically just take it back out of the next check. Depending on the amount, they might possibly set up a payment arrangement where the amount is paid back over more than one pay period. I have totally been where you're at and in no way would I risk not getting a check at all over the error.
