What would you do buying direct?

I am thinking of adding on my BCV contract and buying at GF or AKL. my question is with everything going on with the limits of TOTWL AND maybe paying for some perks is it worth it to buy direct? Do you think it's gonna change that much for direct/resale buyers?

I think one of the biggest reasons to choose direct has nothing to do with the perks like TOWTL, discounts, etc.

It is whether or not being able to use points at RIV and all future resorts is important. For us, it is and we won’t go resale again because of it.

Perks though are extra and they can and will change so I think that’s how they are viewed.

Direct gives you the ability to take advantage of them, however they exist and Resale does not.

I personally don’t see the changes DVD is doing having a major impact on the resale market until there are a lot more restricted resorts.

I think you will need direct points to stay at the Riviera, Poly2 & any future DVC resorts. I think DVD will continue to require direct points to qualify for Membership Extras, which includes access to specially priced annual passes (when they become available again), Member Cruises, Moonlight Magic events & member lounges. The jury is still out regarding the ability of non-direct members to pay for perks ( if such a program is rolled out). It may turn out to just be a higher level of paid Membership Extras for those who already qualify.

For some, the additional cost of direct will not be worth the benefits. For some, it will be. It's a very individual value judgement.

It is very clear from your posts you have a bias against resale and advise folks to buy direct from Disney. Seems to be a strange stance for a moderator of a site that is sponsored by specific DVC resellers and goes to great effort to make sure only DVC resellers that are sponsors are mentioned here.

That's unfair. Really unfair.

Sandisw makes clear that for her specific needs and wants, buying direct is preferable.

She acknowledges as she did above that the perks may not be important to others who thus may be happy with only resale contracts and are not interested in staying in RIV.

The good news is I get to be a moderator and a poster, but rest assured, I am required to follow all the same rules.

Not that I need to defend myself...but my posts simply share the reality of the differences and what matters.

And, the reasons for certain brokers being blocked or not has nothing to do with being sponsors. The current sponsor is World of DVC (DVC Resale Market). Plenty of other brokers can and are discussed. So, no one is blocked simply because they are not a sponsor.

And, to be clear, there are plenty of posters who won't go direct and share those thoughts all the time posters have plenty of information that support both sides.

I simply think the direct vs. resale discussion is important and something that is an individual one. Since 2016, and especially 2019, there are big differences between the two. IMO, it would be wrong not to share those differences with those thinking of buying DVC, whether it is me or someone else.

Even the post you quote simply shares my reasoning for going direct. Resale lacks what we want and so it is not a product that works for us.

But, if someone says "I don't care about the perks and I only want to stay at the L14 resorts, does direct matter?". My answer would be that based on that, it doesn't.

My top advice is, and always will be, that DVC is too much $$$ to buy a resort or a product that you don't understand. Look at what has happened with TOTWL....many never knew that access to that space was not part of BLT's POS. Or, that resale buyers could ever be restricted from visiting it. So, when I share reasons for buying direct or share info about resale, it is for this purpose.

To be honest, I really bought for the perks and I did it recently too. I didn’t care much about the delta in price. I wanted points right away and I wanted any and all perks I could get now and later. It was a club that I could join and I was willing to pay. I actually called to buy OKW because I loved that resort but ended up buying RIV without every staying there. I am super happy with my purchase and would do it again in a heart beat.

Comes down to if you can get annual passes or good ticket discounts.
For some, it very well may. On these boards, having discounted APs seems to be a priority for many.

However, those are not necessarily a consideration for others who go only once annually as we do.

We've never had APs. And, we get better ticket discounts by far from my husband's employee perks.

P.S. We bought in direct because the perks were very appealing even though we knew they could change at any time. I've since helped keep Basin White solvent thanks to the DVC discount. ;)

I wouldn't buy direct at all with the recent decisions Disney and DVC are making. I view DVC as significantly more risk to own than I did when I bought.

If I were buying direct, I would buy DL Tower or wait for Poly2 (even with restrictions). I can also see a case for RIV working for some, if you really love it there and don't plan to sell or maybe have adult Disney fan kids.

I hate done my fair share of shopping there and the discount for DVC is more than AP!

But you are right. The AP is the most significant perk that can save people IF it applies. But it doesn’t for everyone.

I would even say that a better perk would be savings off tickets. I think many would find that valuable.

As mentioned, buying for perks alone may not be wise because they are not guaranteed. It’s the lottery ticket though. You may or may not win and have them.

I do think the restrictions on points are more important aspect to deciding.

I think your choice is between buying AKV resale or GFV direct.
Don’t buy AKV direct.
Good luck choosing 😁

I would still buy resale. Looking online, there are much cheaper options than buying direct.

I would take it you are a resale fan?

I personally would never buy resale. Resale is to much of a hassle for me to want to deal with. The process takes way to long. I like the fact that I can call Disney, they get me what I want, no ROFR, no restrictions, no questionable ethics of sellers and there brokers….. and my points are available today…. Not when member admin get around to it.

I had closed direct sales in less than 72 hours from the first light bulb going off in my head.

Sandisw makes valid points…. Disney will continue to restrict resale.
new resort will not be available to resale points from other resorts….resale owners at RR already have an issue where they Almost have to book at the 11 month window since they can’t book any where else.

if you want to buy resale, I’m sure no one will stop you…. But when, I mean if, Disney figures out a way to pidgin hole resale into home escort only….. you have been warned…

There are a lot of people who may consider this a significant resale benefit. 😉

Reckon DVCresalemarket should throw this in?! Bet Aulani would fly off the shelf.

Except to ever backtrack on the DVC resort agreement that is part of the POS…which is what gives owners trading rights through BVTC…requires a vote from owners.

Or, BVTC has to be completely dissolved, all resorts become single resorts, a new trading entity opened, and the resorts all join again.

That would impact direct points as well during that transition and cost a whole lot of money so it won’t happen because even then, it could be challenged as simply being done to work around owners votes to amend.

So, I think if restrictions on where to use points is a goal, they will just apply to new because in 19 years, 3 resorts will be that way anyway!

So you're saying she should change her opinion because of the board sponsor?

We all have our own biases for our needs or the poster's, they are our opinions, and they even change over time with what is currently going on. I rarely advise anyone to buy direct, but have from time to time because it makes sense for some people. I believe she actually has both types of contracts, as many DVC members do. So, it's not like it's one or the other, like you seem to think it is.
