The store we usually go to, for the past 20 years has baggers.

I have tons of bagger experiences, this one is in the top 5:

The bagger had filled 2 paper bags for me right up to the top, then the last item came down the conveyor, a 2 ft long loaf of French Bread.

He picks it up and realizes it's not going to fit in either bag. He looks at me, I look at him, then he folds the loaf in half and stuffs it into one of the bags.

I just looked at him, gave him one of the purse lipped head nods, and went on my way.

I am sorry about your pies. My husband and grandson bag our groceries. And I always send fragile items down last so I can keep an eye on them. One of my pet peeves is when a bagger packs a bag way too heavy. Or they pack four large glass jars of pasta sauce in one bag and do not double the bag. And one time I got home to find my bread in the same bag with the Clorox.

You ate the pies, they were fine, appearance now withstanding, no reason to complain about it after the fact. It's just a silly thing (not calling you silly, but the complaining about it after eating them) that the store is probably going to roll their eyes at and is the type of story that goes viral for all the wrong reasons. I understand eating the pie but you have to understand by doing so you're removing the responsibility of the store.

I am definitely with you on having issues with baggers but it's a time sensitive thing when you are at the grocery store, that is the time to get things addressed when it comes to issues surrounding how things are put in bags or if you get home and there's issues you do NOT consume the item that you have an issue with especially before you've contacted the store.

Don't bother the store and next time you go make sure you check fragile things even though we all wish we didn't have to (been burned ourselves with things like eggs from grocery pick up, just better to check).

I would have been unhappy due to the prices of groceries but since they were tasty, just show the photo at customer service and ask them to give the baggers a heads up not to turn pie or cake on it's side!

It’s a 40-minute round trip drive to go back to the store, so that’s why I took pictures to show them if I decided to complain the next time I was there.

I don’t really think the pictures are necessary.

Next time you buy pies from that store, just remind the bagger to keep them flat and check them before you drive home.

I knew it was Meijer even before I saw the pictures. Strawberry Rhubarb, enough said.

I like the idea of sending the pics to Meijer letting them know of the bagging issues. Hopefully they will do a little something for you. I know when I have issues with Kroger Pick Up giving me pitiful produce, they always refund back to my account.

If they don't, that stinks. Just glad the pies no matter how ugly they were tasted good. That's the most important thing!

The law that goes into effect January 1 apparently says this. See link in post 14. I believe stores opposed the 15 item limit.

Really? A law that states self check out has to be under 15 items? That is ridiculous.

Thanks for the update. The state limiting no. of items is ridiculous IMO. I definitely prefer to check out my own groceries, as do many people. In fact, 1 of our major chains has a scan & bag as you shop option. I absolutely love it. The other chain had it during the pandemic but stopped it 2 years ago due to increased loss costs. But they’ve been doing some kind of smart cart trials. It’s not the 1950s, people want & are capable of using technology, even for full carts of groceries.

We normally use self check. The Walmart Neighborhood Market and the local chain grocery store both have someone available to check you out, but we shop early Sunday morning, 7 am, and you may have to ask to be checked out. Apparently ADA required them to have a staffed check stand open, and here in California, you can't self check if you have alcohol.

Exactly! The only thing I would do "about this" as the thread title asks, is be more careful next time to ensure the pies were packed properly. If I'd specifically bought something special for an occasion (although it would never be pies) and it came home aesthetically ruined, I'd take it back for replacement. But since that wasn't how the OP played it, there's no recourse at all.
