As for kelly being the strongest proponent of wider, at that level there is no other option than having the right equipment. If you shoot wide you need wide. even if it is only one shot.

Yup. I can't imagine how I'm going to get my overused-for-sample fireworks shot, the purple-castle shot (the one I lay down on the ground) and the ferris-wheel shot without having my 17mm end of the lens.
True in most cases you can move back... but in my case I have to dig the ground in order to get those shots. I don't think Disney would like me to dig the ground where its castle stands
It's all about photography style. My teacher, for example, almost never need anything wider than 24mm (when he needs it, it's usually when he's with me and he just borrows my camera with the 17mm- xx mm lens attached to it.)
