What would happen if I cancelled January 14 right now?

What would the penalty be if I cancelled 1 night of our stay (Jan 14) at this point? The points would go into holding? We would be hoping to use them for a May stay. We would be open to any week and are perfectly happy with OKW or SSR. We have a December use year.

Yes they would go into holding. They could only be used to book stays within 60 days, and would expire at the end of your UY if not used. They could not be banked.

From the member website:
A Holding Account is a "parking space" for Vacation Points from a Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation that has been modified or cancelled 30 days to 1 day before your scheduled check-in date. Here are some guidelines regarding usage of Holding Account Vacation Points.
  • These Vacation Points can be used for a new Disney Vacation Club Resort reservation during your current Use Year as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
  • These Vacation Points can also be used for a new reservation during your current Use Year in two ways:
    • For the Disney Collection* (except Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels), Concierge Collection*, or Adventurer Collection*, you can make the reservation more than four months before the end of your Use Year for a check-in date that is 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    • For Disneyland Resort in California and Tokyo Disney Resort hotels, or the World Passport Collection, as long as the reservation is booked 60 or less days before the new check-in date.
    * Available when you purchase directly from Disney.
  • These Vacation Points cannot be banked or borrowed.
  • These Vacation Points must be used by the end of the Use Year or they expire.

Thank you! Anyone want to speculate if we could get a 2 bedroom at SSR or OKW at 60 days out for last week of April or first week of May? We could book most of the stay with regular points, then just book the last needed night with the holding points. We could also book a room using cash anywhere else for that last night as a back up.

I would think your chances would be pretty good as that is well after Spring Breaks & Easter. Since you can look at those resorts now (it is within the 7 month booking window for non-home resort reservations for your time frame) why don't you go on-line and see what they have now to give you an indication of availability. Obviously, it could change between now and when you can book for the 60 days but it is worth a look.

If your use year is Dec then why couldn't you book your entire stay now with your regular use year points and then at 60 days out call MS to use the holding points for the one night that you are canceling now. You would still have plenty of time to bank any remaining points outside the holding points. You may want to talk to MS first though as I have never done this but it seems to make logical sense.

Availability is wide open now, but anything is possible from now till then. It says holding points reservations must be made within 60 days of travel. I am curious if you can reserve the room with other points and then switch to the holding points when you get within 60 days. Is that allowed? Of course you would have to have enough points to cover this.....but if its just one nights worth going into holding then I would assume there is enough.

Yes, we have enough regular points to cover our whole stay if we do OKW. I am going to call MS tomorrow. I will post back whether they say I will be allowed to switch to holding points at the 60 day mark. I wonder if they will make me cancel and re-book at that time. That would leave the small possibility that we would lose the room. It's not a huge number of points at stake, but really I hate to waste even one! :)

I am thinking it would be a cancel & rebook. Otherwise you would be circumventing the 60 day restriction placed on holding points.

Much the same idea as you can only swap out home resort points on a reservation that was booked with your home resort priority earlier than 7 months.
