I have a mind block on the word definitely. (Or is it definitaly, definatly, defanitley???) I can't tell you how many times I've looked it up on dictionary.com! I just can't remember it. :o

It's not so much a spelling problem as a typing problem. I can never type the word municipal without stopping completely and spelling it slowly. I used to live in a town where there were tons of county buildings on Municipal Drive--glad I've moved away from there!

vacumm. Or is it vacuum? vacume?
Drives me nuts.

When I was learning to spell, I always mixed up the word "friend". In order to spell it right I would sing the Mr Rogers song about "you are my friend you are special, f-r-i-e-n-d special ..." I've forgotten the words now, all except for that part!

"Probably." I had to look it up just now!! If I don't have spell check availalbe, I replace it with "most likely" just so I don't have to worry about mis-spelling.

I never remember how to spell deodorant. And yup, I had to look it up just now. :o Ah, well, at least I remember to wear it, if not how to spell it. Well, usually anyway... :p

I'm like NMAmy because mine's typing the word "restitution". I work in criminal court so I have to type that word about 100 times a day and I never get it right on the first try. I always want to add an extra U.

The word for me is weird. It just feels wrong to spell it that way, even though I know it's right. It's all those years of "i before e" training, I guess.

You pick it and on the DIS I probably spell it wrong. LOL! :p If I was doing something important, I'd think about it, but I just post and move on! :p I get all twisted around with words that have a lot of vowels in them. :o :p

As far as the word definitely and weird:

I'm an elementary education student. Yup! I'm gonna be a teacher and I don't care how I spell on the DIS! LOL! :p Anyway, I had the pleasure of grading a day's worth of spelling/vocabulary tests for a group of 6th grade students. All in all I guess there were about 120 tests I had to grade that day. Definitely was one of the words for the week and the test scores made me  Four! Yup four! students out of approx. 120 students spelled the word "definitely" right that day!!! I pointed this out to the cooperating teacher thinking she would address the problem in next week's vocabulary/spelling lessons and all she said was, "What can you do?" :confused3 That was the end of that. Most of the kids spelled the word "definately". :)

And the word weird? To remember how to spell that is simple! Weird is weird because it doesn't follow the "I" before "E" rule! LOL!

Necessary. (If that's even right!) Is it one c or two? One s or two? That word knocked me out of a spelling bee in elementary school, and I still haven't learned to spell it!

Oops...forgot to add this little trick earlier for liznboys. Just remember that definitely has the word "finite" in the middle.

LOL!! You're funny. And thanks for telling me that about definitely, makes me feel a bit better! (Even if it was 6th graders!!) :p

The first word I thought of was: "definitely"! It's a word I seem to use a lot, but I have to look at a few times to see if it looks right! Also, "recommend" - is it 2 "c"s or 2 "m"s or 2 of each?

The 2 words I have the hardest time with that I encounter often at work are "referral" (I only want to put one R in the middle) and "lien" (I always want to put the e first, I don't know why).

Thank you!! Yeah ya know before I posted this thread I was studying it and trying to figure out an easy way to remember it's spelling. I might just remember it now! WOOHOO! :wave2:

liznboys! Sorry about that! I didn't mean to imply anything! :o :p LOL!

I keep Merriam-Webster online as the third site in my favorites for days I care about my spelling. ;) And ... I just had to cheat and peek to see how to spell "Merriam", I spelled it "Merrium" and I knew that wasn't right.

LOL!  :teeth:

I used to have a problem with separate and then I had an English teacher tell me there's a rat in separate and now I don't forget.
