What/Where/When Do You Start Buying For Christmas?

I know we just celebrated Christmas but I'm already thinking of it again!

What do you pick up throughout the year? Where do you find your deals (certain stores/spots/semi-annual sales) and where do you store it away from prying eyes? Have you already picked up anything?

All I can say is that if you shop now you need to write it down. Or else you'll be one of those people with 18 gifts for Sarah. When you should have/or thought you only bought two. I seem to always forget how good the sales get near Christmas. This year the plan is to wait unless something really sticks out.

My boys, now 23 years old and 18 years old, still love stocking stuffers. Whenever I see something I pack it away. I have one shelf, in my guest bedroom where I store gifts.

I'm not positive that buying gifts early saves a lot of money. If it is for your own children, I always concentrate on the main things they really want, and often they don't know what they want from Santa until November, so if you buy something really early, it either has to be returned, or it's another gift stacking up, not what they really wanted.

In fact, most people I know who buy early either misplace what they bought, or have to buy even more later because they found so many cute things for Susie and now they need more things for John.

One thing that has really helped me is to focus on gifts that I want to make, for instance I like to give my nieces cash, but I always make something little and cute to put the cash inside of, like a
homemade envelope, or one year I made tiny little (2 inch) teddy bears and sewed them on to an envelope..... I also have other gifts that are hand made, and I get going on them during the summer.

You could also work on menus, lists of cookies you want to make....

Something that really saved money was a list of ingredients that I don't regularly buy during the year, but I do buy for the holidays. I wrote all of those down. Then, in November we put up the list, and it was easy to look for and watch the sales, versus getting ready to bake and yikes you have to run out to find something.

I know I am not answering your question at all. I think, for ME, the bottom line is that I am much better off, money wise, to not shop unless necessary. It never saves me money because I see so many things I want. Instead I stay home, go do something free, or DH goes to pick up the one specific item. I'm sure you have much more self control than I do!!!

When my DD was little, it was easy to just start in September and get things here and there.

Now (she's 14). I'll start in maybe October, getting things like iTunes cards or little accessories for stocking stuffers. In November, I tell her to start thinking about what she wants so I can get it all done before the insanity of Black Friday and everything else. I'm willing to pay and extra few dollars in exchange for avoiding the crowds.

I am slowly trying to get self control! Lol I have 5 young kids and you're right... What they like today will have changed 10 times over until Christmas.

I like the idea about the menus and ingredients!

I know my tween will want some type of electronic (there is nothing we don't already have and use as a family: iPod touch, laptop, basic cell phone for emergencies, a kindle fire, Nintendo 3ds, wii) and I refuse to buy an iPad for a will-be 11 year old. I'm sure one of them is going to ask for it that's not happening! There is no need for another electronic in this house.

My kids only get gifts twice a year- birthday and Christmas so it is hard for me to say no bc they are well behaved and make good grades. So when they ask for 1 and only 1 gift it is hard for me to not buy that one thing and instead buy 10 things they didn't ask for that will end up at the bottom of the toy box in a month... and if I buy a big (ie expensive) gift for one then I feel I have to match it for the other kids. This is my yearly woe.

Santa may just bring each of them a gift card and call it a day!

I buy all kinds of things throughout the year. Stocking stuffers like razors, bath and body works bath wash I always buy at the semi annual sale and put away also. Normally my mom likes a pair of gold hoops, so if I see them on sale I grab those up early. And I keep a list of gifts in my iphone so I know what I plan to buy and check it off as I buy it. Slippers, gloves, scarves and all I buy early on as well. And sometimes if there is a big sale on a purse at Calvin Klein or something I will pick it up and put away. The other day I really lucked out there (although I bought it for me) there was a satchel for 70% off then I combined my rewards and only paid $4!!!
Also, my furbabies have a big christmas, so I have already started buying their toys:lmao:

I buy ahead because I found the perfect item for a specific person. I do keep a list so I am not surprised when I get the box out and find way too many gifts for one person and none for another.

Not prying eyes here. I keep the gifts in the guest room closet.

I am muslim so we dont celebrate christmas we celebrate eid-ul-fitr at the end of ramadan

Starting the day after Christmas I buy clearance decor, wrapping etc. Not much this year though, as we had most of what I want already. I also file away any chirstmas craft magazines, projects I didn't get too. Any old gift bags, pretty wrapping, that is not reusable but parts are still nice, I cut into gift tags with a punch I have, or for cards or parts of cards before throwing the rest out. I might finish or start a project or two during the winter, but once it warms up everything gets put away until the Fall. Then I normally start shopping and making gifts sometime in September, and try to be done with most of it by the week after Black Friday- I don't let the kids give me Santa's list until after Thanksgiving or I would finish sooner. Thanksgiving is a beautiful hoilday and I like to give the whole being thankful thing it's full course before we move on!

I bought a few little ornaments and my Christmas cards at 75% off a few weeks after Christmas this year:thumbsup2
We always pick up some ornaments on Disney trips as well.
For the rest of it I usually end up waiting until September or so. I buy other things as I see them and end up giving them to the person they are for because often it's something little and special that I know they will love, and I have no patience:rotfl:

DD will be a little easier to buy for ahead of time now that she's halfway through 10th grade. She'll need quite a few things for University so I might as well start putting them away for gifts as I see them come up on sale.

Baboo- did you mean to post twice?

I did pick up non-themed candy on clearance after Halloween this past year that would still be in date come Christmas and it saved me a ton!

Hurray! A Christmas thread in February, I LOVE it!
In years past I would start purchasing for Christmas the day after Christmas :rotfl2:
I would store in luggage, master bedroom closet, trunk of vehicle...

I would purchase items from where ever I found a good deal. Candles, tea towels...

Now, I start making homemade gifts during the summer. With my list in hand I usually start gift shopping in September.

I am cutting back even more this year. Sent about 30 cards out last Christmas and got about half back. I also gave 2 people gifts that we always exchange with and nothing in return. So this year I plan on sending out New years cards, if I get one from you, I will send one out. Opps, sorry not a venting thread already.

Good luck in your early shopping/keeping away from prying eyes.

Oh, and always looking for fresh ideas for homemade gifts...:santa:

I shop all year for gifts for all occasions like birthdays, Mother's and Father's Day in addition to Christmas. I usually browse the clearance areas at Target and check deal sites everyday and when I see something with a good discount that I know the person would like, I buy it and keep it until when I need to give the gift. I just hide the gifts in my closet or a drawer in my bedroom.

When it comes to Christmas propper, I am a grinch. Hate it hate it hate it.

Although I do enjoy the whole buying and giving thing. I have managed to limit the people I buy for to a manageable number, however with a low wage and WDW holidays to save up for, stretching present buying over he year makes sense to me. I don't go out of my way to find things until about August, I have started already, seing and picking up something if it is the right fit for someone.

IMHO one well thought of gift trumps a bag of stuff picked up just to make it look like lots.

My Mom and I buy whenever we find something that someone would like at a good price. We don't go out of our way for gifts until fall but we will pick up stuff if we see it (although it seems like we always have a lot left to buy anyway). I just got my little cousins presents because they were something they love at a fantastic price.

We will pick up things from just about any shop.

I actually started this month. My DH and I really only buy for our son. The rest of the family we collectively all agreed to do homemade gifts -- so I will work on them all year (quilts, blankets, wreaths and some pinterest stuff)

DS (12) loves books -- he is thrilled he has his own library in his bedroom (huge floor to ceiling, wall to wall, custom-made wood bookshelf that is 75% full). He received over 120 books for Christmas last year -- but its the only thing he wanted. I think he has over 500 books in his library. He would like to get the entire Star Wars collection -- so I'm going to work on buying those through Ebay this year --huge amount of books in this series. His Pawpaw built his bookshelf -- so DS mentioned to him last week -- he has almost filled it. I think he is hoping PawPaw will make him another one.

In years past I would start right after Christmas. Now I start in October/ November. I seem to spend less on gifts if I wait.

I only gift to my husband daughter, niece and two nephews. And we do experience gifts, not stuff. So I am always on the lookout for stuff....

Last year I got my daughter a cooking class.
My husband got a rafting trip.

This means less stress and less junk in my house.

Last year I was able to get most of my shopping done in November before Thanksgiving. Since my children are still small, (they were 2 and 3 this past Christmas) it's pretty easy to hide the presents in my house.

We're doing a Disney Trip this year Dec. 4-10. I'm really hoping to have all the big things purchased by that time. I'm also planning on getting some cute stocking stuffers from Disney. But all in all, this Christmas will be a much much smaller one for us since we're doing Disney so close to the Holidays.
