What week do your kids go back to school?

Our school starts back August 26. We always try to finish around Memorial day unless there are snow days. We have to make up a maximum of 5 days.

The school systems in our area are going back August 11th. We homeschool and I haven't finished up our "flexible" schedule yet, so I'm not sure exactly when we will start back. I like to go ahead and plan a schedule, but if we take an unexpected trip then I can adjust our schedule. I always write it out in pencil.

That's about what we do, too. We follow the area school's schedule except that we start earlier and end earlier. Sometimes it really works out good that we started earlier because then we can sneek in a trip in September to somewhere.

Last year we were given 5 days at a time share in Williamsburg, VA. We only had 7 days notice. Out of 8 families that were asked about going, we were the only ones that could, and a big part of that was homeschooling.

For all we give up to homeschool, owning your own schedule is a nice perk.

Classes technically start Aug 28 for all of us but I am unsure if my oldest will go back or work. Depends on what she can get and where. While I teachnically go back the 28 I only have a Monday class this year so won't actually have a class until Spet 8.

Same here, Browneyes, except here they start on TUESDAY, 8/5. Seems they always start on a Tuesday or a Wednesday...

It may seem early to the rest of you, but they also get out (or in our DD's case, GRADUATE!), on May 18th!!!

Suburban Chicago... we start August 25 and get out June 16th, unless we don't use snow days that we will get out a few days earlier.

DD starts by July 29th with her year round schedule... Love those extra weeks off in value season

Start dates in Texas are governed by state law. I think it says that school cannot start before the week that contains the 20th of August. Ours starts on Aug 18th.

Here's a quote for the reason behind the law:

Early school start dates and a shortening summer tourist season annually cut an estimated $332 million out of tourist economies in Texas and migrant farm workers lose out on another $27 million in earnings foregone. The present structure of the school year may also be costing the districts as much as $10 million in higher cooling costs each year.

As Disney parents, we loved the early August start... it meant that there would be a full week for "Fall Break" in October... perfect for going to WDW with small crowds and cooler weather! Now the fall break is only two days, so we take our daughter out school for the other three days. Teachers don't seem to mind, giving her the home work early, and generally wishing they could go with us!

Nice to see some other homeschoolers around here. I take my trips to WDW at the end of September, value season and low crowds, WOO HOO!!!
