I and my six old nephew had a good time assisting with weeding and planting, as well with other activities at Shollenberger Park, which is a wetlands restoration/people/dog walking park in Petaluma, Ca. this past Saturday.
The turn out was great, and one group of participants came from as far as Sacramento. Everyone was busily either pulling weeds, planting, or assisting in other ways. It was the type of project that six old children were able to participate in, which is nice, so everyone had a job. Matter of fact, there were children that did more work in comparison to some of the adults. ;) Really.........
We both became filthy, but we don't care, for like I always say, you can only become so dirty, then so what....ha!.... It is like getting wet in the rain, you can only become so wet. Although it would be nice to be waterproof! :) It did not rain that morning, but it had the day before, so the ground was very soft, which was great for digging, for it was so much easier to do so. Otherwise, the main type of soil in Petaluma,is not, but rather is adobe, which is very tough to work with.
We are interested in continuing to assist with the endeavors of the parks volunteer organization, which is PWA, which stands for The Petaluma Wetlands Alliance. Matter of fact, my nephew asked me if we were going to be coming back tomorrow (Sunday) that was cute :)

So cool! We did this yesterday (Sunday) at the same place. We loved it. Afterward, we had lunch at Juanita Juanita, we needed it! Abbey just made the cut off, she toughed it out. I am a tad bit sore today, but it was worth it.

well it's nice to here that there are some people on these boards from my neck of the woods... i've lived in petaluma all my life.

I had no idea there were other people from Petaluma!!!! I've lived here almost my entire life.

I had friends who did the same project on Sat. They are a family of 5 with a 7 year old & 4 year old twins.

We've signed up to help at a food bank, boxing & sorting......great cause & can't wait to hear back from the organization to confirm our dates!!! It will be me, my DH, & 3 of my DS (23, 20 & 8).

It all sounds good! How did everyone else's day go?

I'm waiting to sign up after we get back from Kauai and my budget season slows down a little at work. Then hopefully we can help out Project Ride here in Elk Grove.

We loved ours- it was easy and yet we didn't feel like we were ripping anybody off--wasting time or anything. I've volunteered for a lot of organizations and believe me it's possible to have too many volunteers. The vouchers came, we printed them and we're good. Really a flawless promotion.

I have my day coming up later this month. I'll be helping with the maintenance of a preschool that's pretty close to home. In the e-mail the organizer sent out we'll be doing cleaning, painting, building, weeding, etc. But it also looks like there is going to be a lot of people there!

I'll post here about it when I've finished. I'm really looking forward to it.

I've done that through work a couple of times and we had a lot of fun with it :thumbsup2

We had a great experience. We signed up about a week before we volunteered. Our service was done at a local arboretum that was located only 15 minutes away from where we live. We were supposed to show up at 9:00 a.m. and work until 12:00 p.m.

This organization had a special work party just for Disney's GAD. There were lots of families there, one worker told me there were 75 people there. They had us doing all kinds of things. Taking down Xmas decorations, raking leaves, organizing storage sheds, planting, moving plants, making new pathways. The workers were estatic at how many people were there to help them and totally viewed it as a "Win/Win" situation. They even provided donuts and coffee for all the volunteers.

It was a great experience, we enjoyed it very much.

Five days later we received our email with our vouchers.

We haven't signed up yet, but hopefully we will in the spring. I'd like to do this as a family project.

It would be nice if people are inspired to volunteer more once they try it out.

A friend and I both signed up to make homemade fleece blankets for a charity organization. We plan to get together on a Friday night with a couple glasses of wine, a good movie and make blankets! :) It should be a fun way to earn our tickets!

I saw this listed for one of my choices. How many do you have to make per a person and do they look very hard to make?

Thanks

I was told in my welcoming email from the local linus that 2 per person is the minimum but that they expected a day's work and most people can make 3. Since my 6 year old is also signed up, since it was allowed, I have grave doubts about his ability to do that :). Since I know how to make quilts, though, I think I might make a simple quilt for mine (a quilt type blanket -- no tying, no monofilament thread) meets the requirements, and set the rest of the family on the floor with disney movies to tie the 2 fleece blankets for my son's requirements.

Wow, I had no idea either! I'm in in RP!

One of the parents in my class was talking about her family doing the blankets for the Linus project. I'm glad to see this here. I looked breifly a while ago at the choices but wasn't able to do those. I haven't gone back to look. How did it work for them to know you did it and to get your tickets? Just wondering how that all works.

Everyone's experiences sound really great, with many more in the near future as well!

My experience was great, I went on Monday to our local Red Cross and helped in putting bulk mailings together, it was a nice time, great people that were there. It was neat, I am happy that Disney has done this program, it was neat to feel useful and know that there was a good pay off in the end. :goodvibes

Sounds very good. What did everyone else do, and where? How did it go?

I JUST signed my daughter and I up for a local blanket making project as well. I'm just going to work 12 hours between the two of us and make as many right sized fleece blankets as we can :)

That sounds very nice. Blankets are always something that is very much needed.
