I now have green onions, eggplants, green beans, and my husband planted purple sweet potato. My daughter wanted corn, so we will be planting sweet corn.
What do you have in your garden?

we can put annuals & veggies in here--zone 4-- after Memorial Day.
I will be doing heirloom tomatoes, Cinderella pumpkins, bell peppers, cukes, hot peppers, Japanese eggplant, yellow squash, zucchini, Moon & Stars watermelon,
Lumina pumpkins, lettuces & corn. It sounds like a lot but, with the exception of the tomatoes & hot peppers, a few plants only of each. There just the 3 of us, & after some freezing & utilizing local produce, we really don't need that much.
I grow for the convenience of just popping outside & getting a salad. I also like to grow heirlooms or types that don't show up, or are too pricey, at local veg stands-
I do grow a lot of herbs. In the yard, in the garden, in pots, window boxes.. everywhere! :sunny:
For some reason lavender does really well for me, although that's not supposed to be the case. This year I plan to really get a lot more lavender plants :goodvibes

As a child, I lived on Oahu. How well I remember the lush fragrances & vivid colors of the flowers. :cloud9:

Sounds like you will have a very nice and full garden.
I wish lavender would work for me. After visiting Vegas and seeing all the lavender, I purchased seeds which didn't work, so I bought the potted plants, and they are not working either. I think it needs to be a bit cooler then where I live.

I SO have no time for a veggie garden (cuz I work in a garden center, d'OH!), but I can't resist a little fresh lettuce and broccoli, so I potted up a mini-garden in a container on my front steps...red sails leaf lettuce is really pretty, and broccoli, well, just yummy!

I also have a rosemary plant I was able to winter over, and that's on my front steps, too, and I'll throw some swiss chard "Bright Lights" in my perennial border for color and cooking.

Ooooh 'Bright Lights' is so pretty!

what gardening zone are you in Plymouth?

What are Bright Lights?

I'm in a pretty solid zone 6, although the 2 winters before last it was more 5-ish. I think everything came through fine this last winter, though. Still waiting for my lavender to show growth. It's usually fine, but we ran over it a few times with the plow... .

I love swiss chard, as I do most leafy greens, but ain't 'Bright Lights' a kick? I'd grow it just for the pretty colors. I'm very into colorful foliage!

Has anyone grown the 'Easter Egg' radishes yet? they are colorful, also.

Patsy, can you access some of the different varieties of lavendar?
I can't grow most of them--would love to be successful with the white, but after 2 tries, they just don't winter over-

Hmm..Ursula, the dreaded plow blight! :scared1:

I also grow way too many sunflowers! :goodvibes they just make me smile :sunny:

In Hawaii I can remember we had bananas, hibiscus, monstera, rubber trees, zebrina as a ground cover, papaya trees...yumm!

Yes, I had gotten two of the lavendar plants from Lowes, and only one of them is still barely growing. I have not seen flowers on them yet, and it just stays low to the ground so I am not expecting much out of that plant.
We have bananas, mangos, avocados, hibiscus, and all those other trees here. It's avocado season now to so it's nice to be able to share them with family and friends who don't have avocados right in their backyard.
I have never tried or heard about Easter Egg radishes, but they sound cute.

I am in zone 9-10 down here in South Florida so I have my little garden already producing. I have a husky cherry tomato plant that has the best tasting cherry tomatos. All of my plants are in pots. It has so many green ones just waiting to ripen. Then I have a jalepeno that has had lots of peppers on it almost all of them are gone and I dont know what is going on with the leaves so I don't know if it will produce more. I also have a hot and sweet banana pepper and a purple belle pepper. Then I got a patio tomato and 2 different kinds of strawberries. Everyone elses gardens sound interesting. I wish I had more room to have more.

I have a dozen different varieties of garlic growing now that were planted in the fall. I planted red and yellow onions yesterday (in the snow), scallions also wintered over. Around May 15th we can plant tomatoes and peppers and the rest around here. I'll also have some pumpkins, gourds and sunflowers, herbs too. I actually forgot to plant radishes. I hope I have some seeds. Oh well, another trip to the store.

It sounds like you have a nice variety going on in your garden.

Our tomato plant from this past year, is dying so I will have to try and replant it. For some odd reason, I have a hard time growing tomatoes, and the one that I mentioned above were little seedlings that I just tossed aside that grew.

One of the good things about living just south of Houston is we get to plant our vegetables early so I should have ripe tomatoes in the next week. I plant tomatoes, zuchinni, peppers and yellow squash. I attend the Harris County Master Gardeners Association plant sale each year that occurs during the third weekend of February. They sell heirloom plants that are right for growing in the area. Our favorite is one called Texas Wild. The tomatoes are smaller than grapes when ripe but very sweet and flavorful. I have four of them and they will produce hundreds of tomatoes which are great for salads and to eat right off the vine.

our backyard is almost ready for landscaping, and I want to start my little veggie garden, but really know nothing about gardening!

I want to plant kabocha (japanese pumpkin), but don't know when to start it. I suppose it should be now? We live in so. cal...

I also will probably plant green onions and maybe japanese eggplant. I'm not very good about watering though so we'll see! LOL We're going to install a drip system, maybe that will help? It gets quite hot in the summer...

We just moved into a new house that has a dormant vegetable garden plot already dug. The husband of the previous owner passed away and the wife couldn't keep it going. My husband really wants to start one of our own.

My question is for anyone that has any knowledge of gardening conditions in Southern Ontario (Hamilton/Burlington area) what is the best time to start planting? Also for all you experts what kind of vegetables do you recommend to start with? This year we want to kepp it small to see how things go.

You're in Zone 6a, which is the same as me. I have lettuce and broccoli in now, you can also put in cabbage, brussels sprouts, leeks, parsley, peas, and pretty soon spinach and swiss chard (MMMM, swiss chard!). All of these are easy for beginners. Peas you start from seed, I'd buy starts of the others at my local garden center. Mix some nice compost into the garden bed first, then start planting!

Drip systems are the way to go!!! I have ALL of my gardens, including veggies, on a timer so that I don't "forget."

I grow Roma tomatoes (the least acidic), lemon cucumbers, kentucky blue green beans, zucchini, a seedless watermelon, and a few green pepper plants. I think I'm going to try and trellis my cucumbers this year. This is the first year that I get to use a rototiller in the garden instead of turning it by hand!!! :cool1:
