This might be a dumb question, but what type of heat/air system and thermostats are at the values? We stayed at POFQ this year and it was the wall unit and it was very noisy.

Pop has central air with a wall-mounted thermostat just like most homes have...so no noisy wall units there!

I'm not sure about the other value resorts. :confused3

Just like DisneyJimbo said. The only thing is that at Pop the thermostat has a motion detector, it goes off when no one is in the room and when sleeping. For this reason we stopped staying at Pop. ASsports, ASmu, and ASmo has a standard thermostat. When staying at Pop we came back to the room and it was warm and stale inside. Woke up sweating a different night. No thanks! Some Deluxes have the same thing.

Great thanks a bunch! I seem to be leaning towards ASMo lately. So knowing this about Pop helps. Thanks again!

I was at Pop in March and the motion sensor thing never bothered me, the room was alway cool enough for me. The thing that did bother me was that 8 - 10 rooms share the same AC system ducts. So if someone is smoking in a room that shares the same AC system as you, your room gets smokey.
I know everything is NS now but you never know.
When i was there peolpe were smoking in another room and it was pooring into my room from the AC ducts. It was not cigarett smoke, if you get my drift......
It was awful, happened 3 out of the 5 days I was at Pop. All the maids did was bring in a fan. I asked them to call security but they wouldn't do anything either.

We discovered a trick w/ those motion sensor systems. Buy a balloon (even if you don't have kids) on your 1st day. The helium usually lasts for a week (even if it starts to droop a bit) the a/c blows the balloon around the room (just a bit) and fools the motion sensor so the a/c stays on. Works for us!:goodvibes

We kept our thermostat at Pop at the lowest setting the whole time (68 degrees). However, because of the motion sensors it never really got cool in the room unless we were in there for a long time. I wish I had known to get a balloon! I really can't stand hot, stuffy hotel rooms and it can get that way quickly with hair dryers and 4 people milling around one small room.

A couple of weeks ago, we stayed at a Hampton Inn in Denver. Not only did our room have an air conditioner that stayed on all the time, it also have a ceiling fan. We left the air and fan running when we were out of the room and it was always nice and cool when we returned. I also liked keeping it a little cool at night so we could pull up the covers. I hate waking up all night and tossing the covers on and off because I'm hot! In fact, that room at Hampton Inn was around $100 a night, had a microwave and refrigerator and was about the size of a deluxe at WDW. Now, if only we could transplant it to Disney property and stay there for the same price!:thumbsup2

Each room at the Pop Century has its own combination A/C and heating unit. They are mounted in the wall at the front of each room. They do not share any ventilation ducts with other rooms. Each unit has a fresh air intake vent on the outside wall along the walkway.

The thermostats contain an energy saving sensor that will moderate the temperature when the room is not occupied. The sensor can not be “fooled” by the use of a helium filled balloon. The sensor is activated only by the narrow range of infrared heat given off by a human body. The sensor is not a motion detector.

I remember hearing this about the Pop Century AC units, but I never found it a problem. I always like my rooms very cold and I was always fine at Pop.

I have never heard about this motion detector thing! I thought that AC units kept the room at the temperature that they are set to, so that your room is still cool when you get home after a hot day at the park :confused3

Does anyone know which resorts have these motion detectors, or where I can find a list?

As I mentioned, the thermostats do not use motion detectors.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection works with and encourages the lodging industry to conserve and protect Florida’s natural resources. The Florida Green Lodging Program is part of their effort to promote water and energy conservation. Six of the WDW Resorts are certified as “Green Lodges” and have energy saving thermostats (among several other conservation measures). The Animal Kingdom Lodge, Boardwalk, Coronado Springs, Caribbean Beach, Port Orleans and Pop Century are all Green Resorts.

As other WDW Resorts are rehabilitated or rebuilt, they too will go Green! In addition, the Hilton at WDW is in the process of being certified as a Green Lodge. Since this thread is particular to thermostats I should point out that not all of the older resorts (such as the Port Orleans and Caribbean Beach) have made a complete change out of the thermostats. Rather, they are phasing in new equipment with ongoing rehabs.

there is a way to bypass this sensor> just press the power button and the down arrow until the display reads "BP" then you can set the temp you want after 24 hours it resets and you will need to do it again:rolleyes1

Thanks for the tips, but everyone seems to be talking just about Pop. What is your experiences with the thermostats at All Star Movies? I am trying to decide between the two resorts and this may be a big part of the decision. Thanks again!:)

The thermostats at the All-Stars Resorts are of a standard design and do not have any special energy savings features. You set the temperature and the A/C will cool the room (or the heater will heat the room) to your desired level.

I have noticed that sometimes "Mousekeeping" will change the the thermostat setting while they clean the room and they sometimes forget to return the thermostat to the previous setting.

My arm wasn't high enough to make the ones in CSR turn on when I woke up hot, so used the TV Listings card, and waved that and it kicked on.

So, I'm wondering how this infrared heat thing works.

Passive infrared sensors have been used for many years in intrusion alarm systems. These detectors can be set to ignore cats, dogs, birds, etc. and only trigger an alarm when a human body is detected. They can even be set to ignore a small human (a child) but trigger upon an adult human (based upon larger body mass).

The energy saving thermostats at the Pop Century have passive infrared detectors. If you examine one of these thermostats you will observe that it has a white plastic convex lens that collects the infrared light. Also, it does no good to cover the lens to defeat the sensor because infrared light will pass through most anything (think of radio waves going through the walls of your house).

Based upon your experience, it could be that your A/C unit or thermostat was defective or perhaps you have a diminutive body mass?
