Good morning everyone!! Our trip is fast approaching and the one "must do" that I need to do is purchase a new video camera! Mine is about 9 years old, its the kind that you insert a mini disc into. Anyway, the film is not that clear compared to the HD ones that are out now, it doesn't really have a "shaky hand" feature(or whatever thats called...stabilizer?) and also not that compact. The main purpose is for filming home videos/ family vacations, but I would also like to be able to upload some to YouTube as well. Any recommendations for a video camera?? Thanks! Not really trying to spend over $600.00.

Speaking of....has anyone watched that video on Youtube that is in 4K on the Haunted Mansion!!! O.M.G.!!! Amazing... but that camera apparently costs $3,000-$4,000!

I use a pretty popular one called an iPhone. Do you guys know how to post videos to Facebook?

Thoughts....
  • for compactness, waterproof housing.... look at the GoPro products. However these cameras offer no zoom, no image stabilization and most models... no viewfinder.
  • most video cameras today use SD cards. They are so affordable compared to 9 years ago. You should consider a good computer software to edit your video afterwards before going to YouTube.
  • look for a camera with forward facing microphones for best audio quality. Top mounted microphones are useless outdoors where there is no ceiling to reflect sound back to the microphones.
  • you can get 4K cameras for much less than that. Some GoPro's offer 4K recording abilities. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/sony-ha...ry-camcorder-black/2948053.p?id=1219563946199

We bought a Samsung HMX-F90M-iMX-F91 in 2014, never regretted it Totally digital, small, good battery life and no where near your $$ limit. For about $200 I got the camera, a small tripod 2 backup batteries and a charger.

Thank you! Yes, I will definitely be looking into a good video editor. This will be my first time with an SD card camera so I am sure that's a must.

Thanks! I will check that camera out that you mentioned :-)

you can get 4k video in a $100 camera !

I agree with the others, just use your cell phone or maybe get a small mirrorless camera

In 2011 I videoed on my LG Vortex, the results were disappointing when compared with the 'regular' cam I had before and particularly when compared with my latest Samsung. Your results may differ.

Some amazing video is produced every day using DSLR and mirrorless system cameras. Canon's are famous for this (though Nikon seems to have caught up) ( http://www.imdb.com/list/ls059550382/ )

I can personally reccomend the Canon EOS-M mirrorless system. It has the brain of a Canon T4i in a compact body. The video it shoots is as good as anything you will get out of a hand cam and unlike most cam-corders, it takes great photos too.

I'd say smart phone would be your "easiest" option. If you have one that you can swap out the SD or micro SD card in, just buy another card that will be large enough for your needs. Unfortunately, I have one that you can't swap out the card on and it's pretty full. I'll probably hook it up to my computer and copy/cut my content like current pics and videos to free up space before our trip. You can also buy a smart phone off of eBay that does allow you to swap out cards and use it for the purpose of your Disney trip.

GoPro for sure, its easy to carry, can take being banged around and can go underwater. we love it.

On a forum like this you're going to get so many opinions. As someone who shoots video for a living, I'll throw my two cents in.

There's really three categories to look at.
Point and shoot
DSLR
Specialty (action cam)

Point and shoots are great. Compact, good quality, affordable, low learning curve.
Best option is the Canon G7X. ($599) just in your price range, amazing quality, decent low light, good size sensor, and takes great stills as well. Another option would be a Sony rx100 ($399) A couple of years older but still a great option. There are newer versions out but the original rx100 will be just t fine for your needs.

DSLR Either camp is good (I know Canon so I'll share those) I would choose a Canon Rebel T3i. A few years older but it has the same exact sensor as all of the Rebel series (T2i-T5i) The T3i has a flip out screen similar to a camcorder experience. It has a much larger sensor than a point and shoot and you can change lenses. This will be better in low light and that bigger sensor will get better image quality. You can find great starter kits around $529 that will include two lenses. Typically and 18-55mm and 75-300mm. Both will have image stabilization. Again, this will be a dual threat, great video, great stills.

Action cam. These are super awesome, but I don't think you want this as your main cam. Buy a $129 GoPro in addition to a main camera down the line.

Good luck. ;)

There's also hybrid and mirrorless categories. Love my Nikon DSLR.

like the other poster said, there is also a mirrorless category of cameras which have good video features and have the ability to use any lens (with the appropriate adapter)

I use either my Droid 2 smart phone or my Nikon Coolpix L27 P&S camera to take videos.

I'm still trying to accept the fact that apparently so many people now seem to think that their cell phone is an acceptable substitute for a still camera and then this thread comes along too! Wow! And a GoPro as a "standard" video camera? Wow again!

And people can't even get the orientation right when shooting with said cell phone! :D

Some amazing photos have been taken on camera phones. Pictures that would never have existed except that the photographer had access to a capable camera at that exact moment.

It's a brave new world.
