What type of stroller for older child?

Our DD is 7 1/2, very tall and thin. We had planned on her walking on our trip last week, but with the heat, she just got tired. I rented the strollers there at the park - they are very sturdy and she fit in a single just fine. The only snide comments she got were from her 9 year old brother :rotfl: . It was well worth it to us to have her happy, and if a stroller did that, so be it. Rent if you need it!

With a 7 year old in a stroller, be prepared for some snide comments :guilty: When we were there a few weeks ago, I was amazed at how many park visitors were *vocal* about things like that (sadly).

Who really cares what other people say or think?!?! As long as your child is more comfortable and rested, therefore, everyone in your family happy, then that is all that matters!

You can feel however you like ~ I was just stating what I witnessed in the parks.

You might want to rent a stroller as needed. My niece and nephew are 7 and have walked the last two years, but I miss the stroller as a carryall. It comes in handy to carry backpacks or other items when they get heavy.

If you decide to get a stroller the Maclaren Volo is the best choice for older kids but it is a bit pricey at about $90 at Baby Universe for the 2005 model. (I can't post the website because the site won't let me but do a search for it). This stroller is the best choice for older children my son is 44 in tall and he fits perfectly and there's still room on top of his head between the canopy. It's a lightweight stroller (about 9lbs) and is also the right size, no problem for taller people to push them around. They sell them at babies r us too, so it's a good idea to go to babies r us and try them out. Anyways, use coupon code may10per on this website and it has free shipping, so it ends up being $89.99. You may want to buy the 2004 model but it doesn't bring the canopy, in that case look online they have them for about $65. You can always sell it after your disney trip and get back at least half of the price.

My son is 4 and we didn't bring a stroller, but it was so darned hot we had planned on renting one in the parks. My son LOVED having the stroller, it was like a treat for him, and it gave my husband a break from him being perched up on his shoulders.

Expecting a 4 year old (or even up to a 7 year old) to walk 5 miles in 95 degree heat and be happy is asking a lot. I don't have a stroller for DS anywhere else but in WDW it's a treat for them, and they get a little rest in-between walking from attraction to attraction. I don't want to make it sound like I don't want kids to get exercise, that's not the point of a stroller IMO, but some people probably say that kids are lazy if they're in a stroller over the age of 3.

I know for a fact I saw some kids 10+ in strollers and if that makes them happy and the parents happy, so be it.

We rented one for my DD who was 6 1/2 and we definately need it...first day there we ended up taking her to emergency care she had a severe ear infection which we did not know about but with the plane trip the night before caused it to flare up.. So she was under the weather for several days but we just rolled on without the stroller we wouldnt have been able to see half of what we did. We are going again 9/24-10/1 and I think we will definately rent strollers just to have when she does get tired.

So do what is best for your family and have fun :cool1:

I would definitely go with a rental. My niece was 5 last year when we went and she is very skinny, but also very tall for her age. She wouldn't have been comfortable at all in any type of umbrella or regular stroller, but she fit pretty well in the rental stroller.

As for people making snide comments, that is so ridiculous. These are the type of people that don't belong at Disney. Honestly, what does it matter to them if a tired child is in a stroller? A day at the parks is quite a long day for a child of any age!

Have you asked her what she might like to do? A 7 yr old girl might feel very awkward sitting in a stroller if she hasn't done that in a long time. To me, it's more important to not overtax the kids. A quick break at the swimming pool may be all she needs to recover. We always head out early in the AM, do the stuff we want to do and then go back to the resort by lunch time or thereabouts. No commando for us.

Then, again, she might welcome the stroller if you give her the option.

I'd rent one there, if possible. Otherwise, you'd either get stuck lugging an empty stroller around all day (or one piled up with everyone's stuff!), waste time backtracking to the entrance of the attraction to get the stroller, or exhaust yourself out by having pushed a 7 yr old around all day!

Rent one during the late afternoon, and enjoy your stroller-free mornings!
