We have a 7, 5, and 2 year old and this is our 3rd trip. Our first trip we had 2 kids, brought our Phil and teds jogger with the doubles kit attached. It was a huge pita breaking it down to ride the buses. Our second trip a double bob jogger it was great while actually visiting parks but it is huge and really took up a ton of space in the back of our van traveling. This time we don't want a double stroller, just a small single. I love the cheap Minnie umbrella strollers from Walmart but does anyone have any experience with how they actually push on the sidewalk there? I love that they are light and compat though. Otherwise what stroller do you bring?

Also backpacks, I would love to see some backpacks that offer a decent amount of space but aren't huge. Enough to carry a full change of clothes for our 2 year old, ponchos, an extra shirt for our big girls and some water bottles?

can't answer to the stroller as the one time we thought we might need it, we rented a double for the extra room. It was an expense, but worth it for the reasons that you mentioned (no dealing with on the bus and not have to travel/store in the room).

Back pack - I have a K-swiss back pack that I absolutely love. It is light weight, small but has a ton of space. I believe I found it at Target during back to school.

Our JC Penny currently has backpacks on sale, so you might try them.

We went with our B-Agile and it was fine. One hand fold - just push a button and pull a loop on the seat. I believe the City Minis are pretty similar. Not too big and super easy to fold/carry plus there is some storage underneath too.

I hate the double jogging strollers on the bus. It's so big, we always leave stuff in it that spills as I'm folding it up, I never get to sit down because I'm always standing near the back door holding it up, and it's heavy.

That being said, they are awesome and I'll deal with the busses every single time. I love being able to push 2 boys around with 2 fingers if I wanted. I love the storage underneath, and I love having something to lean on when I'm tired and walking.

As a 6' dad, I can't do umbrella strollers. They force me to lean over while walking and I can't take it for more than an hr.

Backpacks, I have a Swiss Gear that is decent but it's pricey. The one I have has a pouch for my laptop (which I do bring but not to the parks) which works as an insulator for cold cans for the ride to the park and lumbar support which is awesome. Just make sure you get wide shoulder straps that have cushion to them.
