What type of meals can you do in a studio?

We are just 2 adult no kid. Just that now we have only one 1 income instead of 2, we need to go the cheap rount. Thanks goodness we bought DVC in cash when we had money couple years ago, now we only have to pay the annual due and look for the cheap airfare we still can enjoy our Disney vacation. We are planning to go to the park just one day (the give a day promo) and the rest of the time just enjoy the all the resorts and dtd.

That's another great idea bobbiwoz! We can make 2 meals out of it. A bag of premade salad should last the whole trip. I love it we have a fridge in the studio! :thumbsup2
Yes! Great idea!!

This is us and always has been. If air is too much, we drive. I love hanging out at the resort and DTD!! We were never big fans of restaurant food and always made meals in our room even the month we stayed in a studio!

Turkey bacon cooks fast in the micro and used our Mickey Waffler (purchased in gift shop as a souvenir) alot too!

Hello Liferbabe! I am glad I am not alone out there.

Anyone had problem with the smoke detector before? especially since studio doesn't has a kitchen fan.

I've brought a little electric grill for grilled cheese sandwiches, and never had a problem with the smoke detector. Never did burn anything.:goodvibes

I agree with many posts... precooked bacon, coffee in the filter packs, Bertolli meals in the bag are pretty darned good. I like to make breakfast sandwiches. Just put your egg in a paper bowl for about a minute in the MW. Toast your english muffins, then put then put the egg, slice of cheese, and bacon on the bottom half of the muffin for about 45 seconds and voila... a real tasty breakfast sandwich. Also works with Canadian bacon (actually better).

The precooked bacon is good to make a BLT for lunch. Bread and tomatoes are essential for your stay.

Breakfast-Granola, Cereal, Pre-Cooked Bacon, Eggs, Pop Tarts, Toaster Strudel, microwave oatmeal (DS13's favorite), hot chocolate.

Lunch-Cooler weather-Grilled Cheese, Blt, Tuna Melts, Meatball Subs (1st meal, leave meatballs in fridge to defrost) Part Microwave & Toaster. Summer weather- deli sandwhiches, salads, Publix sells hard boiled eggs perhaps the delivery stores do as well. They are great for sandwiches or to add to salads. Add a package of baby carrots & celery (I clean it and cut it and put it in zip lock bag) to save room.

Dinner-Progessso Soup this week since temps are dropping, Uncle Ben's Precooked Rice (heats in it's own bag) w/ rotiserrie Chicken & a salad, Ceasar Salad w/ chicken (left overs). OKW has grills by the quiet pools so we do grill chicken & steak, and baked potatoes while we swim.

Snacks/Hors D'oeuvres- Microwave popcorn, hard cheese & crackers, sliced peperoni/salami, salted nuts. (Good w/ predinner cocktail). This is really nice to do by the quiet pools while grilling.

I just make sure to bring in zip lock bags my favorite seasoning rather than having to purchase them, like Montreal Steak seasoning, parmesan cheese, onion/garlic powder, salt & pepper, small jar of mayo & mustard, dried chives. These things don't take up much room in your luggage, add a package of small disposable containers, a few sheets of foil wrap (for the grill) and a variety of zip lock bags and it makes the whole stay a lot easier. I think you can still bring sharp knives (a must, can't cut cheese w/out one) as long as they are in your stowed luggage. I also bring some lysol wipes, helps with the clean up. We drive in and have a cooler but for those that take ME I think it just takes a little more pre-planning and organization.

Since the fridge/freezer is small it may make sense to do 2 deliveries of groceries for extended stays, even with the cost you're still saving oodles of money eating in. Also for a few buck see if the grocery delivery services have those cheap styrofoam coolers, with ice from the resort you can maximize your fridge space.

We've got 2 studios @ SSR -2/11/-2/15, money's real tight so we only have one ADR this trip, we're eating in!

I bring an electric griddle too and never had an issue with smoke.

We cook: pancakes, grilled cheese, scrambled eggs, etc.

quesadillas are great on a small grill also.
I recently received a Rocket Grill and it would work great in a studio!
It doesn't smoke at all and all the mess is in the parchment bag that gets tossed. No cleaning!
It's about the size of a 4 slice toaster.
I may take it with us on our summer trip when we are in a AKV studio.

I also like to make cheese, fruit and crackers as a light meal on the patio.

Beaselyboo, you are a chef after my own true heart! I fly, but I brought a small crock pot ($8.52 with tax on sale at Lowes) and abandoned it after the trip.

In it, I made pasta sauce, took some out for sloppy joes and added fresh ravioli to the remaining sauce for the last half hour of cooking (3 meals for 2 total), beef stew (got the veggies from my veggie tray) yield 2 meals for 2, and boneless chicken breasts cooked with salsa, also 2 meals for 2 with one cooking.

I also packed a small plastic cutting board, a sharp knife, 2 sets of flatware, a cooking spoon from the dollar store, a set of pyrex bowls with lids, and 2 bowls from my corelle dinner wear. Zip loc bags, a couple plastic sandwich squares with lids. Bagged tuna, which we ended up not eating.

In the microwave, I did eggs (see method above) I stir every 30 seconds. Steam in bag vegetables, loaded nachos, and shelf stable dinners (not as good as my crockpotted dinners).

There is a toaster and a coffee pot. I didn't know there was a grill at VWL or OKW. I *will* be grilling next time.

If I got tired of eating in, I went to a food court at a moderate or value resort - Coronado springs is good. Just take a bus to a park and switch to the other resort bus. Oh, I always take my own coffee and filters too. If I run out of coffee, I buy a pound of Kenyan in the AKL shop. In fact, I PLAN to run out so that I can do that ;-)

Just between you and me, I took my Keurig single cup coffee maker with me the last 2 times. Of course this is much easier since we can pack the car and have access to grocery stores etc., plus I love to cook, even on vacation. I enjoy the challenge of making something tasty with just a microwave/toaster/coffee pot and the occasional BBQ grill! A few dinners in and out makes for a nice more affordable vacation.

We have always ordered from Garden Grocer as we fly in and use ME. We've always been happy with them. Last August we went to VB and grilled hamburgers, chicken and hot dogs. We had many meals to warm up during the trip and also used the chicken in salad later in the week. We are going in a few weeks and again plan to grill. It worked out great. What I find difficult is finding dishes that are microwavable to reheat or cook instant oatmeal in. We will plan on eating our bfast in the studio (AKV) most mornings. I am not crazy about cooking every meal but making some quick ones help with getting us out and moving sooner and saving some $$.

Instead of taxi to/from you may want to consider renting a car for day from one of the rental agencies located onsite at WDW because if may cost you same or less if you catch a special; most agencies will pick you up and take you back to your resort or take Disney transportation ( to Dolphin or DTD hotel locations). Most convenient to VWL would be National near MK or at Dolphin Resort near Epcot/DHS. If you check over on mousesavers dot com there's information on renting onsite; I'll try to post a link or copy more info over.

There's Walmart Superstore nearby too.

iirc at VWL there are picnic tables near grills so that could be convenient to just grill and dine right there, take a soft sided cooler/picnic bag to easily carry things. For a micro meal warm sliced pastrami from deli counter & make sandwiches on rolls or rye bread & potato knishes (large square type micro best - i like Gabila brand it's carried in most supermarkets).

Enjoy :goodvibes & hope you'll post back how it goes.

I only grill or use the microwave at home. No toasters at OKWest
We do not stay in the room much at WDW so actual cooking is unheard of with our family.
Even on days we just go pool hopping.
Not much interested in meat sandwiches, eggs or bagels.

Peanut butter crackers
Peanut butter and jelly sandwich every day

Freezer is small so you are limited on frozen dinners

Villas come with paper plates and bowls and cups

I will be bringing a bowl to use for microwaving canned foods- soup, veggies, chili

Ziploc bags make it easier to fully utilize the small fridge/freezer
Although the stuff is "mushy" when it comes out of a bag instead of in a container.

Dining Plan leftovers are the best. Wish I had some leftover Puck To Go right now

Can you ride a Disney bus to Downtown Disney and then get a public bus to a nearby store?

I have seen public tranportation buses in/around WDW but we've never used it; post your question over on Transportation board too, you can probably get lots of suggestions there.

Check out golynx.com, they've got listed on their schedule some bus routes to/from WDW although some routes seem to only have one am and pm run.

Try this link; only took quick look but I noticed this goes to Osceola Square mall, keep in mind I don't know anything about this mall, so you would need to investigate it further to know available stores, etc.

And their site has a trip planner link that you can input start / end location to find out route, etc.

To be certain on most up to date schedules & where these buses travel to/from call lynx.

Best wishes on your planning :goodvibes

Thats so funny. I said to my husband the other day what are we going to do without our Keurig. He response was I see why people need 2 Owners Lockers.

FYI-my sister bought that microwave pasta cooker and it was terrible.. all you really need is a microwaveable bowl and you can make pasta in the microwave, i used to do it all the time when i was in college and didn't have a kitchen

Our favorite easy micro meal is nachos. Can of black beans mixed into jar salsa of choice. Put on corn chips, top with grated cheese and heat. Depending on toppings you may only have to keep the cheese in the fridge.

Try making the instant oatmeal in the ceramic coffee mugs provided in the Studio.
