keep the kids amused??

I have 2 boys (10yo and 4.5yo that thinks he's 10!!) and this is their first time flying. the flight from Toronto to Orlando is almost 3 hrs and the flight leaves at 6:30am (silly me booked an early flight.... what was I thinking.... have to be at the airport for 4am!!)

Don't want to lug alot and I'll be taking something for them to munch on for brekie..... wasn't planning on taking the game boys but wondering now if perhaps I should. They are good travellers but even the best travellers get bored!

who know's perhaps they will be so excited that I won't need to work at keeping them out of trouble!!

I'd be interested too. We leave next Friday and have 2 boys 8 &4. We are taking the game boys, snacks but don't know what else.

Have a great trip!

DD5 is taking some notepads (tic-tac-toe, etc.), card games and a few small toys. I don't like carrying much either, and the flight does seem to go fast with all of the excitement.
I would think the gameboy would be a necessity. (DD has no interest in electronic games)

I don't know if your youngest feels like he's too "old", but maybe a Disney themed coloring book and crayons? They'd fit right into a backpack, plus add a little more excitement for where you're going :D

On our last trip in May, we packed that plus a neat cloth backed chalkboard and some chalk. Our daughter was kept happy during the time that she was awake on our flight.

Our DS14 was happy with a couple of car magazines and his portable CD player.

Have fun!

Travel Magna Doodle, stickers/sticker books, Color Wonder markers and Color Wonder Coloring book.

I think I would bring the Gameboy if it keeps them entertained. :)

Take the gameboys and surprise them both with a new game about time the plane takes off. That ought to keep them pretty much set for the trip. Lots of fun snacks are great too. If there are up at 4:00am maybe they might even snooze a little:teeth: .

ummm I have the feeling after Meet The Teacher Night that DS will be bringing lots of homework!

DO NOT leave their Gameboys home...I repeat..TAKE THEM with you!!

;););););););)

Not only are they great for ON the plane...when you're waiting in line at the airport coming home, they're great for in the car going to the parks...they're great for in the hotel room, they're great for taking to the parks if there are long lines...

Can you tell we're fans of GB??

I always pick up two or three new games. One of your local malls should have a second hand electronics store. GB games can be had for as little as $10.

We wait until the novelty of the plane has worn off before we give them to our kids.

Make sure you bring your charger, or a little pack of new batteries in your carry-on:)

Have fun!!

Ok then I guess we WILL bring the game boys!!lol

now to find a new game for them that won't break the bank!! Wonder if the games are any cheaper in the US then they are here!!

I'm sure older ds will have homework to do also but my goal is to get it a week before we go and have him do the bulk of it at home (with the exception of the reading and the journal)

For little ds I'll see if I can find him a neat colouring book or perhaps an I Spy book... he likes those!!

Thanks everyone!

IS IT OCTOBER YET???

In the past I have brought. Coloring books, drawing paper w/coloring pencils. Travel...Connect 4, play doe.

This trip I have a portable dvd player. I'm going to buy the new movie "Home on the Range" and surprise them.

Also the new 2005 WDW for kids by kids comes out Oct. 1st. So I plan on buying it and reading and discusing the book on the plane.

i second the gameboy!
Both my kids (5 & 9) have them.
This time i'm buying each of them one of the Gameboy video cartridges. They have actual cartoons on them ... I think each cartrige is about 45 minutes on it. I figure they can watch those, play a little game boy... and before we know it we'll be there!.

Now i just have to find something to occupy ME and keep my mind off the flight!

Above and beyond entertainment, be sure to carry a change of shirt for each of them in your carryon, inside a large plastic bag, just in case. If they have never flown before, you don't know if they might be prone to airsickness. Chewable Dramamine is good to carry in case they start having problems.

Also, have each one carry on a sport-bottle of water, so that they can drink from it on takeoff and landing to avoid ear pain. The FA's will not be able to give them drinks at those times, so you should bring your own, as swallowing will help. It's also not a bad idea to have them take a mild decongestant, such as Sudafed, about 30 minutes before the flight, just in case.

For boys of those ages, I'd carry rather a lot of food, especially things that will curb hunger, like nuts, etc. If your flight is delayed in any way, you'll need it.

Travel magna doodle. I am also getting the color wonder stuff for both kids this year. Last year, my son slept both ways :) This year we are leaving early going down, so hoping he will again. Lots of snacks and I am bringing his Wiggles characters too.

We leave tomorrow am and are packing now!!! Two boys 4 and 6, the game boys are a must and so are batteries!!! Snacks will do well, make sure that they are things that will not melt. Travel games are great but watch the ones with little pieces they can be messy!!!

We are flting Jet Blue and each seat has a TV with Nick Jr and Cartoon Network!!! What more can help this guys with the flight.

Hope that this helps.... check out all that you can on the DIS I planned the entire trip from all the tips.... could not have done it without it.

My son loves the Crayola Model Magic to use on the plane. This time we bought him a kit that he can make cars with - it comes with a little playmat and wheels to put on the cars and 10 individual packages of the modeling clay.

I totally agree. We flew to the U.K. this spring. Our DS5 hadn't flown since he was 8 mos and it was the first time for our DD3.

DS5 threw up at touchdown at Heathrow and continued to puke in the terminal. DD threw up at touchdown on the return to Toronto. In both cases, I'm pretty sure it was because they fell asleep on the flight and woke up disoriented. So, thumbs up for a change of clothes (which we didn't have) and also some disposible wipes because the water in the plane's washrooms do not work after the plane lands.

Also, we also took DS's gameboy. If your's does not have a built-in back light, I would suggest buying a plug-in accessory in case their seats are dimly lit. Also, for your own sanity (and those of any neighbouring passengers), you may want to make sure they have headphones for the unit.
