Just wondering what to say to characters at character meals or just when having your pic taken and getting autographs. I know that most don't "talk" but what are some examples to get a good character interaction. DS is somwhat shy so if we could get an enthusiastic character it would be a big help to know what to say to break the ice.

Just talk to them! They do a great job of communicating back.

If your DS is shy, tell the character. I am sure they have some magic for shy people too.

If it's a character from a movie, our kids like to say things like "I loved in "Blah Blah" when you blah, blahed"....or..."we really laughed when you said "Blah Blah" in "Blah Blah."
(Never thought a 45-year-old man would write the words "blah blah" so much in a sentence...!)

Any good advice for what an adult should say to them? I get kinda flustered and quiet when they come around.

I know, I feel kinda foolish too. But then I remember, THIS IS DISNEY! We are all kids!

Pluto is my favorite beacuse I think he's the easiest to interact with. Give him a pat on the head or a smooch on the nose!

When I see the characters, I always say "Hi Goofy, will you take a picture with me?" and then I thank them and give them a smooch at the end...
Character hunting is one of my favorite pastimes in the parks!

It's always fun to talk about Minnie when you meet Mickey, or ask Cinderella how the Prince is doing. We usually tell Piglet that he's my younger dd's favorite, tell Chip and Dale that they like to play tricks, or tell Belle how much dd likes to read.

We also had a fun time with the villains. The Wicked Queen saw Snow White on a dress dd was wearing and asked if we had seen her lately. She said to tell Snow White she was looking for her. We also had an Aurora pen that we gave to Malificent to sign an autograph book. She refused to write with it!!

I shy away too. One year my husband had me go up to Pooh who gave me a hug, so I just told him/her that Pooh was my favorite character, and Pooh gave me an even bigger hug. But when DH wanted me to hug Mickey I was still a little freaked about hugging Pooh that I couldn't do it.

Last year my sister was with me so she always gets their attention, sometimes I think it is because she is only 4'10" and she looks real young. ::yes::

Anyway we were at the Garden Grill and Pluto come over and just licked her head. :teeth: And when Chip and Dale came over she asked me which one was Chip because she could never tell them apart, well they must have spent 15 minutes arguing over who was the better one. :teeth: I still have the paper where Dale wrote Chip stinks! Dale rules! :p

So if you have someone with you who isn't shy, have them help you out.

In my son's book, Dale wrote: "Chip is Nutz!" :teeth:
I love that page.

We always have fun with the characters, even before we had our DD. Last time we went with her she asked Mary Poppins to say Supercalfrgalisticexpaladosis (sp?) backwards. That was funny. My DH asked Mulan how her dad was, and I asked Mickey when is going to give in and give Minnie a ring already. That was the best. He went crazy! He kept covering his ears and pointed to Minnie and told me not to talk to her about it. We laughed so hard. We just try to say things that relate to them or their movies. Just have fun with it. :hyper:

I was kind of hesitant to interact with the characters on our first trip together, 3 years ago. But, last year, I was having a great time with it. I told Miss Piggy & Kermit that they were my favorite "power couple". We had loads of fun with Kenai and Koda since we were wearing hats with moose antlers in honor of Rutt & Tuke. It was just so much fun just being a kid. Looking a bit too closely at the rapidly approaching age of 40, I will take all the moments of being a kid again that I can get my hands on.

Just loosen up and talk away. The characters are brought to life by some amazingly talented folks. Maggie

Just go with the flow and have fun!

A few years ago in DL, my husband tried to show Kuzko how to get his groove back (by dancing around like a dork) and Kuzko refused to pose in a picture with him.

Sometimes the characters will surprise you with their interaction. On our last trip, I was five months pregnant, and Timon insinuated I was carrying his baby! Actually, I got a lot of special interaction that trip, because I was just starting to show. Phil from Hercules is pointing to my belly in our picture!

You can stir things up sometimes too by saying silly things like calling Chip and Dale squirrels. They get mad! Very cute!!!

My step-brother is built like a tank, and he's about 6'6" tall - at the Studios, he got spotted by Sully from Monsters Inc. who promptly bounded over to him and gave him a big hug.

I was crying with laughter for about 5 minutes, it was a truely awesome moment :teeth:

Thanks for all the great suggestions! I just don't want to be there babbling on and have them look at me like I'm simple so I guess I will go with the flow:cool:

The first time I talked to a character I shocked myself.
Tigger approached me at breakfast, and without any planning, I just blurted out "Tigger you're my very favorite !" I almost cried. The magic got me in the gut. LOL

Now I say small things like

"Goofy your whiskers look great today."

By the way - I don't even have children - and now I'm 50 years old.

We talk to nontalking characters as if they could talk.

When we say they wave, and then we tell them how much we love our meal and they will rub their tummies. Many times the characters will point to my DD's plate as if telling her she better eat.

The more you talk to them the more they will communicate in their own way. Just be open to their signals and you will feel like you are really talking to them.::MickeyMo ::MinnieMo

In Feb of this year I took my Mom (she's 54) to WDW. She's a great lady, but very serious most of the time. When she saw Lilo and Stitch she went up to them and said "I watch you every Saturday morning!!" and then hugged them both and got in between them for a picture. I had no clue that she would react that way to the characters, but it's a memory etched forever in my mind!! We are all kids at WDW :earsgirl: :earsboy:

You may be surprised at how 'unshy' your DD may be! I was worried about this too with my DS8 (but not with my DD6). Before the trip he said ' I don't want to see the characters', 'I don't want to get autographs'. All talk - because he was shy and didn't know what to expect. Well, let me tell you, he turned into Mr. Anticipation and was bouncing in his seat waiting for characters to get to our table! In the parks he would grab MY autograph book! He was not much of a talker but his energy got the characters going.
I (being the adult) was also nervous and felt a little foolish. As we stood in line for Queen of Hearts we could see how 'demanding' she was of her fans. My kids chickened-out. I stood my ground, and conquered my fear! I didn't...no, couldn't say anything, but I did get my picture with her.

Your DD will have a GREAT time...don't worry.

Goofy and Tigger are my all time favs! They always seem to be the most enthusiastic to me.

I used to be scared of the critters as a child. Now I act like a total dork when I get around them! :teeth:
