Ok- dd8 is getting a nintendo ds for Christmas from her grandparents- yea!!! But, I need help with Santa. She is asking for nintendo ds, games, webkinz, clothes. Nothing that really has a 'wow' factor - if you know what I mean. Ds6 is getting a new bike and that will be great- will really get excited and all of that. DD really isn't into barbies and things like that anymore- but isn't really ready for an ipod and the bigger stuff like that. We had considered a kitten for the house (that would be a BIG step for dad and I- we have an outside dog and do not do inside animals well), but we can't really find a good place for a litter box and ds has asthma too, so I do think we've ruled that one out. Anyone with girls this age have any idea? Not looking to spend a fortune, but would really like to get her something that made her eyes light up.... help!!!!

I have a 7 yo DD (she'll be 8 in February), and she really wants an American Girl doll. It is pricey, though. I am not sure that she is getting one, but she wants one! Does that help? Or the HSM 2 DVD that will be out on Dec. 11th? My DD7 will go NUTS over that one. If you can still pre-order the HSM2 DVD, it comes with prints, too. (Check your local Disney store or disneyshopping.com.)

I'll see if I can think of something else.

My dd7 has an ipod shuffle that she loves, it was actually her starter ipod since she is getting the classic for xmas from nana. She really likes having it and she loves that it is pink. You can get a refurbished shuffle from apples website for 49 dollars I bought one for myself last month and have had no trouble with it at all. I bought it on a sat morning and had it by thur.

Its kind of not really knowing what she is into. Best of Luck.

Thanks for the ideas so far! I've thought about an American Girl doll, her older cousin is getting one. But really, dd isn't that interested. I had her look at them on the website with me, and she said they were pretty, but couldn't believe they cost so much. I told her Santa could bring it if she asked him, but he probably wouldn't be able to bring much else. She said she'd rather get a regular doll and a whole bunch of other stuff.
I've also considered getting an ipod- but dh is very against it. Our niece gets everything at such a young age and is so spoiled (she has everything you could think of), I think he is absolutely determined not to do things like that. He says she is too young for an ipod...maybe next year.
She will get the HSM2 dvd and probably a HSM game, but that is kinda for her and ds- they both love that stuff.
Any other ideas?

I agree with the part about "such a young age".
I try not to have my kids get things like this at an early age, because then when they are older....what's left to get them? For me, it doesn't have to do with being spoiled, but just....why rush an Ipod? The 9 year olds I know do not spend all of their free time listening to music.

My DD13 had to wait until she was 11 or 12 until she got an Ipod.
DS9 would like one now, but there are other things he wants more, & he's still at the age where he loves toys (Legos). We'll make him wait on the Ipod until he's 11 or 12 (unless he's absolutely dying for one by his 10th b-day).

I think this is what dh is saying. Kids that have an ipod at an early age aren't necessarily spoiled- I have several friends whose kids have them at 7-9years old. But, in my niece's case, she is absolutely spoiled. Anyway, I think you described what dh is saying to perfectly. Besides, dd isn't really asking for an ipod and she has tons of cds anyway.

Any other ideas?

Here are some more, hopefully helpful, ideas:

* nice piece of jewelry and/or jewelry box
* craft kits (like scrapbooking, making necklaces/bracelets)
* karaoke machine
* lessons for art class, karate, swimming, etc.
* magazine subscription
* digital camera

keep us posted when you find her "wow"!

I have not one, but TWO dd's8, and am also going thru this! They both wanted DS's and games for them. They also have a few arts and crafts type stuff like color explosion light board and light sketcher. One wanted 2 of the hs musical dolls, the other hates dolls. I currently have Squawkers McCaw living in my bedroom and was just informed that nintendo dogs (looks like a stuffed dog that probably does something) are cool. One of them got a rescue pet train/play puppy. I've got rainchecks for Hannah Montana dance mat and acoustic guitar, but I'm not holding my breath on them. They aren't getting a large amount of gifts, but what they are getting is expensive!

* digital camera

This is a good one there have been alot of good sales on cameras here lately. What are some things that your dd is in too what hobbies does she have. For instance my dd has informed us that the ipod classic is good for her to have when we are waiting in line in disney she can watch movies so we are going to use her shuffle to download her songs for dance class and competion for her to have the music at all times. Does your dd have a nice radio/stereo, does she have a tv in her room what about a dvd player. At one of the electronic stores had a portable dvd player onsale for a pretty good price. Is she into clothes what about a gift card/shopping spree to limited2 or someplaces that she likes to shop.

My DD is almost 9 and she is really hard to buy for too. She is getting a DS from Santa as her big gift (altho it was 3rd on her list). Her first two items were a hamster (which would be okay if we didn't have a young cat - which came for Christmas 2 years ago), and a laptop - maybe in a few years! She does love American Girl dolls, but isn't as into them as she was before. She is obsessed with Webkinz. She isn't really into Hannah Montana or HSM. I have been having her look thru catalogs and come with me to the store to see if anything else sparks her interest. She does have one of the Ipod Shuffle refurbished versions, she got that last year for Christmas. She doesn't really play it that much. She is getting a digital camera for her birthday in January that came with a digital frame (black Friday deal). She loves to take photos, so I think that will be a pretty good gift for her.

My dd 8 is wanting a digital camera. Ive been doing some reseach and a decent starter camera you can get for around $100. Taking pictures is alot of innocent fun!

We are getting a few other things, ice skates, pink suitcase, disney dollars :)

a portable dvd player. I thought about it forever and didn't know what to get her as her bigger gift compared to her siblings. And i've decided this will be best she can watch movies in her room when something is on the tv that is not age appropriate or she can listen to her Highscool musical, Hannah Montana cd's etc on it.

Without knowing her interests, it is kind of hard to say. How about that scope that you can play with that makes everything appear larger? Sorry don't remember the name. I'll have to search for it and post a link if I can find it. Would she enjoy something like an ant farm? Is she into computer games? My dd mentioned that Barbie MP3 thing that's out. Is she more of an event girl? Maybe tickets to a play or something? Does she love spending time with you or DH one on one? A year of "dates" could be fun for her.

My dd8 has just this year started to express an interest in dolls and Barbies, so we got her an AG doll and 2 of the HSM2 "Barbie" dolls. She also got a Webkinz and a charm. That was it. Well.... I also got her and my other dd a pair of Nerf dart guns, and I will replenish their supply of sidewalk chalk and bubbles. The weather is finally nice here, so we are trying to encourage them to play outside more.

I have a 7 year old dd. We bought HSM on ice tickets for her for Christmas...I know she is going to love those! Maybe another type of event ticket or planned trip somewhere for your 8 year old. My 7 year enjoys toys, but she really enjoys having someone spend time with her even more.

What about a trip to a local Libby Lu? Does she like to do the whole hair and make up thing..maybe a trip there for her and a friend. It's only about 30 for one child...

Thanks for all the ideas guys! I love these boards! She has a cd player in her room, tv in room, portable dvd player- so all of those are covered already. Digital camera is a good idea- but dh and I have yet to get one for ourselves- I know, WAY behind. But, we need a new computer first and haven't done that yet. Anyway, a trip to libby lou is a good idea- she would love that. She loves HSM and Hannah Montana- HM is in concert in Atlanta here next week- couldn't get tickets anyway- but Jan would have been better. I'm thinking about a jewelry box with several pairs of earrings- got her ears pierced recently. I appreciate all the ideas- they are great! DD is obsessed with webkinz too- she has 5 and I refuse to buy anymore before Christmas- she has a list of the ones she wants (or just all of them I guess), so she will get a few more of these too. I guess she will get a bunch of little things and not a 'big' item. Anymore ideas - I love reading what other people think and get ideas from that!

How about tickets to see something... Disney on ice or something? Or a 5 pack of tickets to the movies for her and 4 of her friends, along with a gift cert to Ruby Tuesdays or something for lunch afterwards?
