What to feed my kids on the plane? High protein, not nuts

I'm troubled as to what I'll feed my kids on the plane ride which is during their lunch time. My oldest NEEDS to eat protein regularly or else he gets neuroglycopenia (brain low blood sugar) issues.

He'll usually do things like yogurt, cheese, hard boiled eggs, etc...but those all need refrigeration. Besides something like PB (or other nuts/nut butters) what can I bring for him to have on the plane???

I can't bring ice packs on the plane, right?

You could try using frozen veggies for you ice. A pack of frozen peas should hold you for a while.

Would edamame work? You could also do protein bars. Depending on how badly you want to avoid junk, Lunchables don't require refrigeration, but only because they are processed to the point that they are not recognizably food.

Edited: the frozen pea idea is clever.

You might be able to buy yogurt, cheese or hardboiled eggs at the airport.

I would buy something at the airport - a sandwich or the like.

Or pack protein bars, string cheese, beef sticks, carrots.

They'll let me bring frozen peas on the plane!?!?! :cool1:
Absolutely. They make a great chiller, they're solid when thawed... Perfectly acceptable.

Turkey or roast beef roll-ups are good. The more meat, the more protein, and they don't stink up the plane :).

Sure. They're not liquid. I think frozen grapes are more practical, though.

You won't be able to bring yogurt, though, unless you buy it after security.

I wonder if I could take a brick of frozen spinach (you know how they pack them in those cardboard boxes?). I didn't even think of things like that as an option before.

I <3 DIS!!!

Well, it's cheap enough that if they make you throw it away you won't be too upset - but then you won't have any icepack, either. A cook may not let it go through, since pretty much any recipe using frozen spinach instructs you to thaw it and squeeze out all water ;).

Due to WLS, I need to eat mostly protein. Some ideas: almonds, peanut-butter crackers, string cheese (I have eaten these after being in my purse for 2 days!!), protein bars, Special K drink mix added to bottled water (with protein). You can usually buy a turkey sandwich in the airport and just eat the meat (toss the bread away.) Last weekend, I even ordered a double cheese burger from McDonalds and just ate the burger part. Pretty tasty!

You can always have a couple of zip lock baggies with ice. Dump the ice before security. You should be able to get some ice past security. Otherwise... can't items like hard boiled eggs and cheese last for a few hours without refrigeration?

I always pack a "lunch" and healthy snacks for my kids when flyiing and use frozen grapes or carrot sticks as an ice pack as they can be eaten after they thaw.

We purchase drinks after security and add them to the lunch box so we have what we like when we want it and don't have to wait on the FA.

Just watch the gels - no yogurt or pudding but condiments are fine as long as they are on the sandwich (or under 3oz and in the 3-1-1 ziplock)

Yes, you can, as long as they are frozen solid. Check tsa.gov for more info.

I agree that hard boiled eggs and cheese will be fine going a few hours without refrigeration, especially if you pack them in an insulated bag.

You can't bring ice packs through security. However, once on the otherside, there is nothing keeping you from putting some ice from one of the vendors in a ziplock baggie to keep your food items nice and cool for your flight.

I have done the same with string cheese! That plus nuts (almonds and pistachios) are what I usually carry in my purse when traveling.

Jerky

Beef or turkey are good long lasting protein.
