What to do with July reservation?

I'm really torn on what to do with my July reservation in the setting of COVID-19 and I'm looking for advice. We are already losing point from an April reservation made with June UY 2019 points. Unfortunately our banking deadline had passed before COVID-19 was on the radar and it is looking like the resorts will still be closed. DVC has not given an option for late banking so these points are just lost. I do not want to make the same mistake again.

We have a late July reservation made from a contract with a Sept UY so banking deadline is April 30. 2 of the points are from 2018 so cannot be banked but the other 30-something points could be banked if we cancel the reservation now. We really have 2 options.

1. Cancel the reservation before April 30th and bank the points we can and just know we will lose the 2 points from 2018. We will also be giving up the opportunity to attend a moonlight magic event during these dates.

2. Keep the reservation and run the risk of losing all the points if the resorts do not open before the dates. I'm a front line medical worker so there is also the chance that I won't be able to take time off if our area is under "surg" even if Disney has opted to reopen the parks.

I'm conflicted because I think it's unlikely things will be completely back to "normal" within the next year but I also think the summer may be the best chance to travel between surges and our family could really use a break. I wish DVC would give us some flexibility over banking deadlines so I could hold the reservation a little longer to see what happens.

So how are you all handling your summer reservations? Any advice from the experts?

I do believe that by the end of the month we will have more information in terms of opening of the parks, as well as if their will be any changes or solution to help those in the current situation with losing points,

So, I’d sit tight right now and see how things play out.

I'm in a similar boat. We are doing a DCL cruise at the end of July and then staying at Poly on our points. I'm hoping DCL will cancel our cruise. I think I'm going to cancel our Poly stay.

I have a end of July reservation; I have a bit more flexibility bc I have a Dec UY so I will just wait until I have official word on an opening. If I were you, I would just wait until your banking deadline to decide.

Could you rebook your late July trip using your June 2020 points? Then you could just bank the Sept 2019 points and use them next year. Of course, your resort/villa type might not be available to book at this point and you might lose some prime ADR’s if you cancel and rebook. I agree with Sandisw, maybe wait until closer to the end of the month to decide.

We moved our April trip (which would have ended tomorrow 😩) to early July, but I suspect we’ll end up canceling depending on how things are trending from a public health standpoint. Unfortunately, if we don’t go in July, we stand to lose 81 points banked from our December 2018 UY. We are fine with that to do what is safe.

Cancel and bank. You say your front line, so you should know the truth about what is happening. Do you really want to be heading into crowds this early?

Kind of in the same boat. We have a July 2-11th reservation. I am holding out hope that the trip will still happen. Even if it happens to be a resort only trip with parks still closed I would welcome the break to relax as I am also in healthcare and need an escape from this reality. If my trip gets cancelled we have about 87 points that might have to put into RCI - what we can get for 87 points with RCI I have no clue but that might be an option. I still have to research this option.

We have a mid June reservation, and we are planning to go with taking lots of precautions. It is the only time we can travel this year since we lost our March trip. It won’t be the same, but hubby doesn’t want to lose 2019 points. He also believes Disney wouldn’t have offered the free dining deal starting June 1 if they didn’t have their own data models or inside info showing they can open then and have a fairly low liability with proper precautions for people getting sick in their resorts/parks.

That being said, if they are open this summer it’s likely to be risky. It depends on how much risk you can tolerate as a person/family. Good luck with your decision!

I would sit tight until closer to your banking window but honestly even if things are open, they will be opening slowly, and if you are looking for the full Disney experience you might want to rebook for a later time. We have first week of December reservations and, sadly, I'm even rethinking that trip.
