I just made a spiral ham and have the bone left. I hate to waste it. :confused3 Please give me some recipes. :worship: I was thinking along the lines of soup, but if you have other ideas I'll take them. Also, can the ham bone be frozen and used later?

Yes, you can freeze a bone for later use. I'm going to use the ham bone I have in split pea soup. Back with recipe later--going out.

We cut all the meat off and freeze it. Some will be in slices and the rest will be in small cubes. We have used the bone to make soup with but really did not think it made the soup better. Now we just throw it out.

I use it when making red beans. Adds quite a bit of flavor.

My bean soup recipe is "souper" easy :rolleyes1

I put the ham bone in the crock pot with one diced onion, one bag of 15 Been Soup beans AND the seasoning packet that comes with it, one bag of lentils and some celery salt. Fill the crock pot to the brim with water.

Cook it all day, fish out the ham bone and it's done!!!

I would use it to season black eyed peas for good luck on New Year's Day. That's what we do in the south! I'd have some black eyed peas, corn bread, pork loin or pork chops, and some type greens (for money, haha). I can't handle eating greens so I guess I'll have to be poor, but I always eat black eyed peas for good luck on New Year's Day. :thumbsup2

PINTOS!!! Put it in a crock pot with some pinto beans, cook until the beans are tender...YUMMY....Make some cornbread and fried potatoes and you have a wonderful meal!!!

Ex- New Orleans girl here. Getting ready to pull out my big pot and make some yummy red beans and rice! The bone really does make it better. I am not sure what the chemistry is but I think the marrow from the bone makes them extra creamy. Also soaking the bone in the beans melts all that connective tissue that holds all the little bits of ham stuck to the bone.

Now that talking like a true Southern at heart. LOL I had that other day with my ham bone.

Can someone post step by step directions on how make red beans and rice.

Epically the rice part. That mess me up every time.

My rice comes out meshy and nasty. I am point now really thinking buy a rice cooker so have fluffy rice.

Buy a rice pot!!!! I make rice almost every day and I just can't do it with out a rice pot. You can also steam in your rice pot.

My late DH would have ripped that ham bone right out of your hands..LOL.. He made the most delicious pea soup (something none of us would eat prior to having his - and his co-workers requested some every time he made it).. Don't ask what the recipe was - it was his "secret" recipe - just like his cole slaw that people said he should sell to restaurants..

So - in honor of my late DH, my vote is for pea soup..:lovestruc

This sounds really good. Do you use the bag of dried pinto beans or canned?

After all the meat and gristle have been shaved off down to the wood, er, down to the bone, the bone is worthless.

(Exception: In some countries the bare bone is steeped in vinegar, calcium is leached out, and the resulting broth is used for soup for an expectant mother to combat osteoporosis in the process of building the baby's skeleton.)

Rice is easy. Twice as much water as rice. (So if I use 2 cups rice, 4 cups water.)

Some salt and some butter. Heat to a boil, cover and turn down lower. I turn it to 3 or 4 on my stove.

Cook 20 minutes. DO NOT PICK UP THE LID!

Tada.. rice.

Rice is a staple around here. I make it a few times a week.

We buy the 15 bean soup packet in the store ( i throw away the seasoning packet that comes with it) and add 2 large cans diced tomatoes, 1 large diced onion, ham bone and water to cover it all. I cook it all day on low heat.
