What to do in the rain?

Our weather for Universal next week (Sun-Wed) is looking pretty crummy:sad1: so I'm trying to prepare for the fact that we may not be soaking up the rays as we walk around IOA or sitting at the beach pool at PBH with umbrella drink in hand as much as I had dreamed of...

So, what IS fun to do in the rain? We have 3 boys (4, 7, 11) and I know they're dying to do tons while we're there! I'm assuming the rain is a good time to catch things like Shrek, or MIB, or a show?

ANY suggestions would be great! Of course, hopefully the weather will change and we won't even have to worry about it!

pack your ponchos and go with your plans as usual! On the up side there are a lot of water rides at IOA, so a little rain isn't going to matter for those. Stay positive on the forcast...your kids will have a great time no matter what.

This is Florida so sometimes when the weather says rain it means you might have thunderstorms for a couple of hours and then it will be nice and muggy the rest of the day. Hopefully that is the case for you, last year during our trip it said rain all week but we had a real nasty thunderstorm the first night while we slept (well tried to) and then rain showers just a couple times in the middle of the day. :cool1:

But if you do find yourself stuck in a storm on the US side most the rides are indoors so you are good to go. On the IOA side, well only a couple are inside so on the rainy afternoon you might stick around at US.

I am going to keep my fingers cross for you that you just get some of those mid-afternoon showers, and heck if it is warm enough we still ran around in them. On the flip side, DH found out the rain hurts when riding Woody Woodpecker over and over again.

If your looking to escape the rain, one option is to visit the nearest store and hope that the rain ends quickly. Another option is to explore the Jurassic Park Discovery Center at IOA or Lucy: A Tribute at US. One other option is to grab a meal and/or a drink at the nearest indoor restaurant.

love your positivity :):wizard:

When we went it rained also. We hit the main store at the front of US and got ourselves some woody woodpecker ponchos and hit the park. The kids' attitudes will mimic a lot of what your attitudes are during the day or rain. We spent our time puddle hopping and splashing, enjoying the not-so-crowded avenues in the park and just having some ole fashion fun like we use to do when we were kids. Oh yeah, wearing a bathing suit and water shoes will make it all so much better. Bring some dry clothes and put em in a locker.

The first whine you hear, just head for the nearest puddle and jump with both feet into it. That usually brings out some laughter and sunshine.

I am going down next week as well. I have checked both weather.com and accuweather, as they generally use different models. Right now, concensus is that Monday could be stormy most of the day, but other than that it seems business as usual in central Florida. In Florida, I always count on an afternoon shower (or down pour), and if I dont get one I am pleasantly surprised.

Plus my weathermen cant get tomorrow right, so no use in worrying about a forecast 5-7 days away! :)

Weather changes all the time in Florida.

I was supposed to go to Typhoon today to go play, but this morning it said storms, so I said nevermind - then when I check again around 11am, it said no rain till around 5pm. :P

No forecast is ever 100% right in Florida weather.

Like everyone said - make the most of it. It isn't so bad.

One of the best times we ever had was a rainy day at IOA. Ds wore his Spidy bathing suit and we wore board shorts and water shoes, couldn't bring my camera so I wasn't proccupied with taking pictures, no crowds, and before we left, we rode the Popeye ride about 10 times in a row! :goodvibes I'd take that over a crowded sweltering hot day any time!:thumbsup2

and since you have boys at the right age for it and there probably won't be a line for it if it's raining, I can tell you NOT to do the rock wall. It's one of ds's favorite things, always makes it to the top, but not when it's wet and slippery, poor kid wouldn't give up either, :upsidedow

I agree with the PP. Rain showers might wind up only being a factor for a few hours. Rain might mean smaller crowds.

OP is asking for suggestions. Movie theatres in citywalk is something to consider. Dive in Movie will get moved from the pool area to an indoor location.

Suggestions hmmm.
If you dont like the weather, wait an hour it will change. Its rare for a weather system to hang around more than an hour.In the mean time, there a lot to do that is inside. At USF, theres more then a few rides that the ques are covered, such as Shrek, Jimmy Neutron, the Simpsons, and ET to name a few.
At IOA, its pretty similar in that most rides that are not weather affected such as Spiderman and the Cat in the Hat come to mind, are also inside ques.Gift shops and rest. are also good places to get out of the rain.At IOA in the Jurassic Park rest. bldg, theres a few dinos the kids can play on, and theres an interactive area, that a baby raptor is hatched in.

At Citywalk, theres any number of places to go hang out, Nascar Cafe, the movie theatre, any of the specialty shops come to mind.

Bottom line, dont let the threat of rain deter you from going to the parks and having a good time. Most of the time if it rains, alot of other people will run from the park like the world was going to end.Thats the time I go since most of the more popular rides will become walk ons.Pick up a few ponchos, either at a big box store or at the park, and wear clothes you wont mind getting wet,and enjoy. This far out I wouldnt be surprised in the least that the rain threat gets pushed back a day or 2 or more.

OK- so you were right- the weather outlook looks MUCH better except for one day! :) Our first "full park" day looks iffy- I'm thinking that US looks like a better park in the rain (more indoor rides/shows). Does that sound right to you?

Yes, US is the better park to do in the rain. Everything is pretty close together as well, so you wouldn't have to worry about getting too wet.

Aww, Good luck! looks like tuesday ad wed are going to be in the 80's! You will still have fun! It rained the entire week of our honeymoon at Disney and we were water logged everyday. It was some tropical storm that kept turning back on itself, anyway we thought it would bum us out but it made lines shorter because most people didn't come out till later. The storm ended up leaving the day we left and it was BLAZING! There was no way that we would have made it a full week if the weather was like that.

I dont know about anyone else but i think that universal is probaly one of the best parks to do in the rain due to most of the attractions are indoors, i think if u did all the rides in the morning first then do the shows in the afternoon then should u have a really good experience

Here in florida it normally only rains for a little bit and then it gets sunny and hot again. I would just pack the ponchos and make the most of it or if it is raining hit a indoor attraction or a store or restaurant.

Don't let a little rain stop you!!! Like everyone says pack a poncho and have fun. the best time my family had was on a VERY rainy day at US/IOA. Wait times were none existant and we had a blast. Word of warning just don't wear white!:rotfl:
