We have a late afternoon flight after our cruise and wondering what we can do for a few hours. Can we check our bags at the airport and then head out somewhere? Where have people gone or what have y'all done while waiting? Thanks!

US airports don't have lockers for storing bags. Most airlines won't check in bags until 3-4 hours before flight. What time is "late afternoon"?

You could do a rental car, that way you'd have a place to put your bags. We go to San Diego occasionally, but we stopped there on one of our cruises, and we took a taxi to Balboa park and checked out the various museums/activities there.

If you think you'd be interested in that, check the prices for the different venues you might be visiting, and compare it to getting the one day Explorer Pass.

You won't have a whole lot of time, as I'd suggest you be at the airport no later than 2:00 (you never know about how long security will take).

You won't have much time, and possibly won't have any. We got home late afternoon ( we live in San Diego) and barely had time to make it to a neighborhood dinner pot luck that day. We are 15-ish mins from the harbor. Getting our bags and finding our shuttle and then getting out of the lot took forever.

You could go to the airport and check in and check your bags. Then you could go to the maritime museum or the midway. Possibly take a Hornblower Whale Watching tour, but that might be tight... Take a cab/uber to Old Town and walk around and possibly enjoy a meal. Cafe Coyote is so San Diego it's almost a cliche, but we also enjoy Case Guadalajara and Case De Reyes. The Whale House has tours also. The Presidio isn't too far if you take transportation. Or just enjoy the Harbor Area. It's beautiful, and there is a playground.

It seems like luggage will be your main problem. IF you could figure out what to do with your luggage, there might be some options, but I wouldn’t try anything since it would be too tight for my liking.

Personally, I’d probably catch a ride and go to Seaport Village since it’s not too far and offers some variety (shopping, food, walking paths).

I think the USS Midway is a good option, but it might take too long to get through. However, there is The Kiss statue next to the Midway and a great tribute to Bob Hope there as well. Next to that is a nice restaurant with EXCELLENT fish tacos and other seafood options.

One other thing: I noticed a lot of cool things in the airport itself. They have all sorts of displays and shops, but since my mom was using wheelchair assistance, they sped us through, and we didn’t get to really look at anything.

You can drive accross the bridge amd do lunch at the Hotel Del (Coronado) and walk around town.

You can head to Balboa park and do any one of the phenomenal museums or walk the Botanical Gardens.

You can jump on the train and go down to the Gaslamp for lunch, or to Old Town for lunch, maybe check out the Whaley House (haunted, alegedly).
Or maybe the Presidio.

You can do the Midway tour amd the previous poster is correct about the fish tacos.

You can tour the Star of India, three mast tall ship.

You can head to Little Italy for lunch. The Waterfront Bar is one the oldest in San Diego and while no longer on the water, ised to be. Great burgers, too.

You can head to Ocean Beach and get the actual best fish tacos in San Diego, where locals go, South Beach Bar and Grille or to Hodads for an as seen on Diners Drive Ins and Dives, burger.

So much to do in the Sandy Eggo. So much.

Any suggestions as to what they should do with their luggage?

Rent a car and leave it in the trunk. Rent an inexpensive room for day use and lock it up.

Drag it around with them like tourists. Hell, I don’t know. I can’t solve all the problems. The alternative is hang at the airport (not a whole lot to do at the SD Airport) and watch the time pass by.

My personal recommendation is to get a rental and head to Coronado. Done and done.
