What to do in Nassau -- cheap(er) ideas for family

Junkanoo Beach is kind of fun. It's certainly a much different vibe than CC. It's a short walk from the port (about 15 minutes) and you walk by the Straw Market. Pompey Square, and Pirate Museum on the way.

We also have walked up to the Queens Staircase which is next to Fort Fincastle. Rawson Square is on the way to those places.

These suggestions are cheap and easy to get to. You don't need to make a full day of it. I enjoy Nassau for a few hours at a time.

Nassau was pretty rough last time we were there. I'd probably just stay on the ship. At least google search it so you know what you're up against.

I was there 2 months ago and it didn't seem rough to me. I'm curious what you mean by rough?

Has anyone had any luck contacting Graycliff regarding any of their offerings that Disney does not offer (specifically, the Cigar & Rum Tasting) for pricing and availability?

The US issued a critical crime warning for Nassau. It's been a couple years since we've been there but I didn't feel safe when I was off the ship, I know a lot of people share in my concerns.

What was it that made you feel unsafe?

We took note of the crime warning in Nassau, but walked around a bit in the immediate area (straw market and to British Colonial Hilton for a day pass) and didn't feel unsafe. There were a lot of people selling things right outside the port area, but a courteous "no, thank you" while continuing to walk with purpose was fine. No one was rude or aggressive about it. There were four ships at the port that day and plenty of other tourists on the streets and I didn't see anything that made me uncomfortable. To each their own though, if you're nervous, you're nervous. There's plenty to do on the ship and I'm sure people who choose to stay onboard have a great day too.

The sketchy, pushy vendors. Locals offering you free goods with a crazy, untrustworthy, look in their eyes (one even pushed an item in my child's hand, we insisted they take it back). I have a friend that was at Nassau a couple weeks ago and she said several armed guards were walking around the straw market and area near the ships. Why, why are so many armed guards needed? If it's a safe area wouldn't one guard be sufficient?
Not me and my family, if we have nassau as a port of call again my crew will stay on the ship.
