O.K. what are some of your favorite foods to cook while camping at FW. I love to use my crockpot and have a wonderful hot meal when we return. I use it to cook a nice roast or stew. With the stew I prep it all at homealso have cooked taco meat , which worked out well. My DS loves to BBQ as mush as possible. What do you all love to cook?

So what is your son's favorite barbequed mush recipe? ;)

We generally grill alot, too. Our first full day at FW we go early in the morning to Publix to get our food for the week. They have some excellent cuts of steak, pork and chicken already seasoned which we pick up. We also stop at the giant orange on 192, just around the corner from the Publix we go to, and get a bag of oranges and grapefruit for the week. My favorite Florida breakfast is an orange and toast - found a great 5 grain italian bread at Publix which makes great toast and sandwiches. Publix also has some mixed veggies (peppers, mushrooms and onions) by the meat I mentioned which is great wrapped in foil and grilled with the meat.

ROFL! :rotfl: This reminds me of the movie "Vacation" when they're grilling Hamburger Helper patties (minus the hamburger!) LOL!

in January -- If it's not too cold, we will do some grilling (I almost typed barbeque-ing which is what we call it here -- but I know it means something altogether different in the southeast. ;) )
We will be flying in so I'm already starting to purchase non-perishables that we'll take with us as checked luggage. We'll have wegoshop pick up our milk, meat, veggies, beverages. Hmmm... I wonder if they'd go to the Big Orange??? :rotfl:
I have enjoyed doing a little light cooking when we've stayed there before -- salads mostly since we were there in the spring and summer. This will be our first time in the cabins in winter so who knows? I might even make Chili (not the regional specialty of Cincinatti :rotfl: AGAIN!) and fry-bread. Yum, Yum, YUM!

We always do steaks at least one night.
Also, we like to cook breakfast eggs/bacon and such.

We live close enough we can bring our groceries with us. But long time FW campers like us miss the fresh produce and stuff you use to be able to pick up at the MEADOW trading post.

Basically -- fried bread dough circles. You can either do a yeast dough or a quick bread dough. They ARE Yummy -- you can either use them like tostada shells (for beans and chili) or put honey or powdered sugar on them for dessert.

I'm the same way, i try to cook as much food at home so I don't have to deal w/ it at FW.
I'm planning on...
Pot Roast
Pulled Pork (pork roast, bottle of BBQ sauce, can of diet coke-cook in crock pot 8-10 hrs & shred w/ 2 forks)
crock Pot Chicken (roll balls of tin foil & sit a whole chicken on top of them, then the chicken bakes in your crock pot all day-eat chicken for dinner one night & use left over chicken for fajitas, chicken salad, quesildias, or whatever else)
Gumbo
Pasta Fagioli (sp?)
Chili
Pasta w/ meatballs (pasta cooked on site, sauce & meatballs prepared at home)

***I make the gumbo, mballs & sauce & chili ahead of time. I line my crockpot with an oven raosting bag (like you cook a turkey in), cook my food, then place the crock in the freezer so that the food freezes in the roasting bag in the exact shape of the crock pot. Then all you have to do is pull it out of the freezer, plop the roasting bag back in the crockpot & when you get back from the park- VOILA dinner! Best part is.... just toss the roasting bag for easy cleanup!!

I'd love to hear other tips/recipes!

msbegin--Love the freezing idea with the roasting bag. As a matter of fact, I just found at WalMart a box of 4 crock pot bags. Tried one yesterday with a potroast and it worked great! I'm going to do the freezing thing!!

When you roast a chicken in the crockpot, do you put in liquid? My 'roasted' chicken is usually more of a soup.

I love the idea of freezing it in the crock. I must try that.
When we were at FW in Sept I was surprised to see some basic fresh produce, Apples, oranges, banannas, onions, potatoes. I hope they continue to have them. I wish they would get more veggis, but it is a start.
We love to cook bacon and eggs outside. I bring a two burnner electic stove top.
My son would eat BBQ everyday!
My favorite Italian tradition is on Christmas eve we do a big fish fry. I always fry outside the camper, last year many people were walking by and smelling our special dinner.
Keep the ideas comming!!

Nope, I just put the foil balls at the bottom- Oh & turn your chicken upside down, so that theu juices flow to the breast meat while cooking. The chicken itself produces alot of juice since the liquid does not cook out because you have the cover on the crockpot. The skin does not come out "crispy" like if you baked the chicken, but if your not a skin eater anyway, you'll end up with the yumiest juiciest chicken ever!

--OH- since it only takes about 2- 3 hours to cook the chicken- and I like to leave mine in the crockpot all day while we're at the park- I remove the gizzards & clean it before I freeze it. Then I can put the chicken in the crockpot before it is 'totally' defrosted. That way my chicken is not all dried out when we get back from the park for dinner.

Mee too!- I never cook anything smelly in my camper... sometimes I plug the crockpot in outside the camper even...

I also par cook my bacon before I leave home... It makes breakfast go much quicker at the Fort. I also make french toast casserole & hashbrown casserole in foil pans. they can be frozen or just stored in the fridge if you plan on eating them in your first few days of vacation.

Can you use a crockpot inside a popup? Setting it up on the table outside seems safer.

We made pulled pork in our crockpot yesterday. The recipe we used called for shredded carrots, onions and a chopped red pepper, along with a jar of bbq sauce. No coke, which was fine because I'm trying not to drink it. The kids loved it! Great way to sneak in some veggies. :)

We usually do spaghetti and meatballs (meatballs and sauce from home), burgers and dogs grilled, steak grilled, pizza (dont forget your cookie sheet and pizza cutter), sloppy joes, grilled chicken salad.

We find that when the parks are open later we dont eat a big dinner so sandwich stuff is a must.

We love a big batch of Sloppy Joes in the crock pot. Easy enough to make at home, and freeze in one of the freezer bags suggested by the OP(what an awesome idea ;) ) This is usually our 1st night dinner so we don't waste time wherever we're camping. I also recently purchased a 12-volt crockpot at Cabela's. This way we can keep things warm while travelling or cook our dinner while we're on our way. It's 1.5 gal, and it has an elastic tie down cord for while you're traveling down the road to avoid spills. They also have it at Camping World. I paid $30 for it, but I'm sure it'll be well worth it. We also love casseroles like pizza casserole, always leftovers for lunch the next day, or a late night snack.

I really like the idea of making stuff and pre-freezing in crock.I bought a new slow cooker recp. book and will have to try out some new ideas. If anybody has anymore keep them coming....

Here is a great recipe!
Take 2 large cans of chicken broth dump them into a slow cooker on high, add 1 can of regular stewed tomatoes and a envelope of cambels chicken noodle soup. Stir it up.
Then make the dumplings. Start with 6 eggs beat them up then add a teaspoon of baking POWDER. Then add flour untill the dough springs back.
Drop the dough by teaspoons into boiling water. When they rise to the top let them boil for 1 minute then take them out and put them into the soup. You can cook like 10 dumplings at a time.
Then boil some small shell noodles, when cooked dump them into the soup. Let the whole thing cook for about 1 1/2 hours.
You can add pieces of chicken, other vegitable or keep it simple with just noodles and dumplings. This recipe has been in the family for generations. Enjoy!
And it freezes wonderfully!

I was just thinking about doing Dream Dinners and bringing along some of them. What do you all think?

It sounds like an interesting concept, but I was actually thinking of doing something similar at home w/ some friends. If we shop sale items (especially meat) at the grocery store & cook based on that we can do it for way less $$ & still benefit from eachothers recipes

The 6 meal package is $120. That's $20 per meal, form me, thats too much $$ for a meal that I still have to prepare myself.

I do like the concept though!

OK what is the recipe for Pizza casserole? I know my DS 16 would love this!
