My DD has never needed a lot of sleep! She's just turned 5 - and started school full-time in September - and we now do 9pm on school days and later at weekends (she's just gone up at 10.15!). This suits us and her. Most evenings my DH and I don't eat until 6.30/7 pm ( having got home at 6pm at the earliest!) so if she went to bed at 7.30 we'd never get to spend any time with her! We read a story (or chapters - we're on Charlie and The Chocolate Factory at the moment) downstairs then when she goes up to bed it's lights off and straight to sleep - she's usually gone within ten minutes at the most!
I'd be interested to know what time the kids who go to bed at 6.30/7pm get up in the mornings? On school days DD gets up (of her own accord 99% of the time) between 7.30 and 8 am. At weekends it's normally 8.30 at the earliest - she's been knwon to sleep in until 9.30 am! This too suits us as we're NOT morning people - in fact my DH was really worried when we found out I was pregnant as he is very much a night person and was scared we'd have a child who wanted to get up at 6 am every day!!!!!
Each to their own but we're all happy how things are!
