What time do you start trick-or-treating?

Happy Halloween everyone!

I'm just wondering what time everyone goes out? And what time is a good time to quit? Sometimes I can't believe how early people start and/or how late they keep on ringing! I just want to get it right! What do you guys do?

Thanks!

Well out here in the boonies, trick or treating officially starts at 1 pm and ends at 4 pm. I don't trick or treat anymore (haven't since I was 12), but the trick or treaters head out as soon as the time officially starts and end right about the right time. In NH, most towns have set times and people follow those.

We can go whereever and whenever we want...we will start around 1 or so and end at 7 or 8...with a few stops for rest in between. I can't believe that government can put regulations on a fun kids holiday as to when and what day they can go...thats insane!!

We don't have an official time, but in general it usually starts around 6 and then by 8 it is starting to quiet down with a few stragglers. We also turn off our porch light by 9.

this year we are supposed to get some good sized t-storms. Only our youngest DD will be going out. Our 16 yr old is going to dress up...but just answer the door and pass out candy. So.. I am going to keep an eye on the radar and hopefully the kids can head out for a while inbetween storms. If not we are going to be stuck with a lot of candy. :earseek:

The kids around here usually start knocking about 5pm and the last ones come around 9pm (the older kids).:sunny:

LOL, ours isn't a government mandate, just official hours (when there is police and/or fire dept/emt presence at most street corners). People are free to trick or treat whenever they want, but they may be turned away a the discretion of the home owners...I like that we have set hours, I wouldn't want to spend my entire day waiting to hand out candy to the random halloweener.

We're having "trunk or treating" at DD's school at 2pm it should last about an hour and then we'll hit some of the houses in our neighborhood for another hour or so. At 7:30 I'm shutting off the outside light and moving the car out of the driveway so kids stop ringing the bell. DD goes to bed at 8 and we all have work/school tomorrow.

I'm not sure who exactly makes the regulations, but it's some big wig in town. Probably the cops. I think it's good that they do set official times for when you can trick or treat so that people aren't knocking for hours. But I do wish they'd set night time hours instead of afternoon:rolleyes:

Wow, very interesting that some places have "official hours" or whistles that blow for beginning and ending of trick or treating! I have never heard of anything like that before. I have also never heard of afternoon trick or treating, it has always been an evening thing here.

My kids are 4 and 6, so maybe strarting around 5 and quitting around 7 would be fair??

Holy Cow, you must get a LOT of candy! LOL.

Typically starts around 6pm here, starts to wind down at 8 and at 9 my front light goes off.

Unless all I'm getting around 8:30 are the older teenagers, then the light will go out then.

I think that's fine. Most people will probably have a light on if they're participating. I think many people are going out in the afternoon because it's a weekend. When Halloween is during the week most people around here at least aren't home until 6 so it wouldn't pay to go out earlier. Since we're doing the thing at her school at 2 we'll just go around the neighborhood when we get back and that will be enough for her.

She doesn't actually keep most of her candy. We leave the bulk of it out for "The Great Pumpkin" and he leaves her a toy in place of the candy. The left out candy gets put in DH's car and he takes it to work. I started this a few years ago and she really looks forward to it.

Well we are going out of town to my parents. They have hours from 4-7, but we wont start until about 5 and then end in about 6:30 since my DD is getting over pnenumonia. An hour and a half is plenty of time IMHO since my kids arent allowed to eat too much candy anyways...I dont want Halloween candy left at Easter like in years past lol.

Around 8pm when the big kids start coming is when I start giving out handfuls and handfuls to each of them to get rid of our leftovers! The candy my daughter gets while trick or treating she keeps about half of and the other half (things she doesn't like) goes into her pinata for her birthday party next week!

From our village website.........

Halloween Trick-or-Treat Hours:
Sunday, October 31, 3:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

Teens probably from about 6 to maybe 9.

we do not have a set time. I think that we will start earlier since it is a weekend day, probably around 4p.m. and end around 7-8. If it was during the week we wouldn't start until 5:30 or 6. Our town has no rules as to when we can or can't trick-or-treat.

Ours is from 6pm to 8pm, it was last night. I only had a few pieces of leftovers, but not many.
