What things to you "Doctor" up?

:thumbsup2 to all of this, except I prefer coffee and Bailey's. ;)

I get unbelievable compliments on a Betty Crocker Butter Pecan cake mix made with mashed bananas, toasted pecans and shredded coconut then spiked with a little rum extract. And I couldn't improve on Newman's Own Sockarooni Sauce if I tried - it's perfection right out of the jar.

You are right! Love Sockarooni as is!!!! And Yummo on the cake mix add-ins!

She is notorious for this. My wife screams everytime she does this. Her doctored up Hot Pockets episode was hilarious. I think SNL even spoofed her.

EDITED: Her Doctored up boxed cake mix recipe. https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/recipes/a93862/9-ways-to-elevate-cake-mix/

Can you please share a link to this Hot Pockets episode or to people on the Internet discussing this notoriety? Because I've Googled and haven't been able to find a single reference. While the link you shared is a guest post that links to two of her recipes that call for boxed mix as an ingredient, they both, as well as the only episode of her TV show that references transforming store-bought things, are much more involved than "putting bread crumbs on Kraft mac and cheese". I'm just missing this being "a thing" and would love to be educated!

Today, since I used the fennel bulb in a veg dish earlier this week, I decided to make the best apple fennel cinnamon muffins (a cinnamon muffin mix with 2 grated apples, 5 grated fennel stalks - you get less than you think, some diced fennel fronds, and 1/4 cup less water and 5 minutes more baking time). I just had one and it's a dream. Healthier than it started, but so, so tasty:)...

That sounds so delicious!

Maybe they're really thinking of Sandra Lee? Her whole thing was doctoring up pre-made stuff.

That was the basis of her show on Food Network when it went on the air in 2011. That was the hook for her show. My wife says the last straw for her in watching the show was when she talked about the new Gourmet Chinese Restaurant in town, Panda Express.

I agree with a previous poster - you're thinking of Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee, not the Pioneer Woman.
Nope, Pioneer Woman. She's the one who lives in Oklahoma on the ranch. My wife and daughter watched her for a while and lost interest when she unveiled her own line of pre-packaged foods.

I add walnuts, chopped dates and/or raisins to oatmeal cookie mix. I add walnuts to chocolate chip cookie mix. I often add a few drops of real vanilla as well.

Weird. I can’t find anything online that shows she’s known for this. And absolutely nothing about doctoring a prepackaged hot pocket. Can you provide a link to that?

She has been known to premake things in large batches and freeze for easy use later. But she still makes that stuff.

Bahaha come on, stop it. She’s talked about Panda Express as a guilty pleasure treat with her girls when they were in high school. If you’re trying to troll, you’re trying too hard.

Is it okay for people like Emeril Lagasse and Wolfgang Puck to have their own mass-sold foods? I’d love to understand the thinking here! She started as a home cook so it makes sense that she’d want her food or at least ideas for her food reach people directly in their homes.

My mom always made tuna by adding ketchup, or cocktail sauce if we had it... really elevates it.

For tuna salad, I add in crushed Italian or Caesar croutons to the tuna, mayo, salt & pepper. It adds a nice burst of flavor & some crunch.

wow, I'm surprised at the amount of processed food, packets and premade things you all use. :scared1:

I would never use a boxed cake mix or pancake mix, or jars of pasta sauce or canned vegetables or boxed mac and cheese.
Don't knock it til you try it ;)

But really different cultures different things. Neither is wrong nor right.

I'm so over the "good cook" thing. People use that to excuse some behavior they find a no-no. It's just simply overused these days and rarely applied in a nice way.

Don't over interpret what people are writing. Just because something is in a can or a box does not in fact mean it's bad. If you want to get a pumpkin and mush it all up go for it, but I'll take the Libby's can of pumpkin puree instead (ingredient-pumpkin) ::yes::.

No trolling. She just amused us back when we watched her show. We were big Emeril fans too, but yes, he lost us as viewers when he started marking spices and food.

Look at her recipes in post #55. But just for you, her Doctored up Instant Ramen recipe. https://www.thepioneerwoman.com/food-cooking/cooking-tips-tutorials/a94711/elevating-instant-ramen/

The examples you've linked from this website were written by other people. And the recipe from foodnetwork.com is from an episode called Thanksgiving Shortcuts. I would not consider it a typical example of the recipes from her show.

Not to mention, unless I missed something, the doctored up ramen recipes are real recipes that use only the noodles. If you always make noodles from scratch, you're a better person than I am!

I don't make my own noodles, but my daughter has a noodle maker and it has a ramen setting. She and my wife are really hard core about making things from scratch that aren't really aren't that hard to make. And the ramen recipe is from the Pioneer Woman's website.
